Okay, we're not on FA right now, so I won't mince my words.
I hate that every story I hear from people who quit their FA admin status includes the phrase "nepotism" "cliche" "talking behind my back" and heads up ass."
I hate that Chase is an actual literal zoophile and is second in command.
I hate that Chase publicly stepped down when this fact came to light but still remained a "secret admin" for YEARS.
I hate that site upload TOS and rules apply to us; not them.
I hate that Dragoneer held a crowdfunding to buy himself a new 20" drawing tablet.
I hate that people have trouble tickets so old they could be enrolled in kindergarten.
I hate that every week I find out about some stupid shit someone on the admin crew does or has done despite repeated promises of "transparency." 11. There have been 11 promises of transparency.
I hate that FA was sold to a private company outside the fandom when there were larger fandom offers to purchase the site.
I hate that every bad decision an admin has made could have been easily side-stepped or avoided if they had taken ten minutes to stop and listen to someone.
I hate that Dragoneer has people who defend him. Still.
I hate that FA is such a bustling hub of activity not because it's good, but because it's easier to stay than to change.
ALL OF MY THIS ON THIS!!
i agree 100% with EVERYTHING you just said.
i'm going to watch it for the next couple of days,
then probably (leaning towards "will be") officially migrating
everything here and elsewhere. this shit with them is ridiculous
and they dont give a fuck. period. end statement.
i'm sick of the bullshit too and so are alot of angry users.
as for the ones defending Neer, hell with it. why? what has he actually done for them?
FOR ANYONE???
I just facepalms
~shrugs~ Eh, I don't really know. All my stuff's there, and I've made a lot of friends through that site, so I'll probably go ahead and stay; despite all the bad things. Although if it gets too much worse I'll have to move.
How much worse?
Legit question. Just wondering what it's going to take.
There are a LOT of people who just seem content to just shrug this off as "lol-FA." But this has been going on for... so goddamn long.
Seriously, move your stuff now, before it doesn't become an option anymore. At the very least, having a back up site for all yours stuff would NOT be a bad idea.
I'm actually in the process of getting everything saved to my laptop now. x3
As to how much worse, I don't know. I'm not really there as an artist, I'm just there as a watcher, but if I was actually an artist (especially a popular one) I imagine I'd be a lot more pissed than I am. DA has a lot of the same problems, but I stay there simply because I have friends there that aren't anywhere else, though I haven't posted anything there in years. As for Weasyl, I guess time will tell. So far I like the site, though it'll take a bit getting used to layout-wise.
But yeah, FA's not as cool as it used to be anymore; especially since I've found out about a lot of the problems I didn't know about previously. Dragoneer selling out to IMVU, and not telling anyone, really did it for me I think. Now I'm getting adds I don't want, for things I'll never buy, and in Spanish. I'm in America and my language is set to English, why the hell am I getting adds in Spanish? O.o
Meh, it's nothing that AdBlock Plus can't fix. I hear that uBlock is pretty good, too.
These days, there are basically two things keeping me on FA; I have too much sweat invested in it to just give up and the partisanship against it on other sites really annoys me.
Well, that's part of the problem though. The more FA pulls shit like this, the more people look to adblock for a solution.
The more people use adblock to block all ads or only furry ads (which weren't pulling in enough to prevent Neer from selling the site), the less the site makes.
The less the site makes, the more likely IMVU will look for other means of making the site profitable.
Or shutting it down.
K, I'm done. Moving all my shit over here and SF. The only reason I stayed on FA was to keep track of reasonably priced comissionable artist who didn't full up at first notice but oh well. I don't mind adverts but this kind of schlock is not tolerable at all.
they've sold out to IMVU, promised to be transparent with the users after an outrage over the sell-out. then they implemented more ads (which in its self isnt too bad) but then turned around and broke their own freaking TOS with 3rd-party porn site ads that have basically flooded the site and have been noted for giving some users viruses just by having an ad-blocker off of their browser. worst yet, is they "claim" it's only on pages with adult content, but it's showing up on general rated pages too.
The administration has been breaking their own TOS for years. This should not come as a surprise at all, in fact it should have been expected.
It's kind of amazing. My expectations keep diving so low, I should be a certified scuba instructor now.
And yet they're still failing to be met. It's almost like 'Neer is challenging himself to not meet anyone's expectations of the site, no matter how low those expectations are. The folder system he promised? The ability to favorite journals? The updated coding? The new sorting/search system? Nothing. I understand if he's just having difficulties, or isn't a coding wiz, but he refuses to accept help from people who know what they're doing. I even heard that there were several furry groups/sites that offered him more money for FA, and yet he still sold out to IMVU. ~sighs~
I will give him credit for one thing, though, he did at least add in the option to edit our comments. It's limited to the first five minutes after you post, which is a good thing since people can't be a total douche-nugget to you, then go back and edit their comment to make it look like they were innocent, but it can be annoying if you don't notice a typo until much later in the day. But all-in-all the edit feature is a good thing, so I'll at leas give him credit for that. Of course, that didn't happen until after he sold the site, so for all I know that could've been IMVU's doing.
I have no doubt that I'll have to leave at some point. I have adblock set to display the artist ads from FA but I don't see the other ads. Like Yawg has said, if they don't fix this quick everyone will go to adblock and the site will lose that source of revenue. They'll have to add subscriptions or premium membership to not see the ads. FA's track record in the making of sound business decisions is not good enough for me to believe this time will be different.
I'm still there for the memories, really. That was the first furry site I ever created an account on, and I've met a lot of good friends through that site, so that's the only thing keeping me there; of course I'm also moving my stuff over to my Weasyl account, and plan on making that my main one from here on out, but I'll still maintain my FA account to watch people/interact with friends. I doubt I'll post much of anything there anymore, except maybe links to my Weasyl stuff (until IMVU .... oh, I'm sorry, ''FA' Ban-Hammers me for linking to outside sources..). I may post the occasional journal or something, but I doubt I'll ever post anything content-wise there again, lest IMVU steal it for their own use.
DID SOMEBODY SAY FA DRAMA? 'COS I GOT ME A TONNE O' THAT SHIT READY TO GO.
Seriously. I'm not even kidding, I've got a folder full of shit stretching back to FA's inception that proves they're nothing but two-bit con-artists, thieves, liars and circle-jerking arseholes. There are things I've seen that would make any fur's ass pucker if they spent a half hour reviewing the evidence.
Oh, and let's not forget: six months to change a fucking banner image. If that's not indicative of a quality fucking service, not sure what is.
I'm pulling what little content i have there, But I'm going to stick around to keep up with the artists i like. i am turning adblock on to prevent the site from making any money off of this bs they pulled (sorry FA artists that have ad space), and I'm going to check each artist i follow to see if they have alternative sites.
I won't stay forever for the simple reason that it won't BE there forever. Though at this point I'm honestly wondering what it's going to take to kill it for good.
I would have to say that I am considering seriously shifting my focus from FA to Weasyl in light of the porn site ads (which I don't see from my home PC with NoScript, but what I do see on my mobile). Not in a "burn my FA account to the ground and salt the server" way, but just upping my Weasyl activity.
All the prior dramafest re Dragoneer hasn't really bothered me much, and same goes for the IMVU buyout. I did notice a a week or so ago how Google-style ads were popping up when browsing FA on my mobile, and as long as they were for stuff like banks and shops I wasn't so minded, but now that I'm getting porn ads... well, it's reaching a tipping point.
Apart from that, I like how Weasyl actually "just works" on my mobile, and how I can customise thumbnails without having to upload separate image files - which is more than FA's really ever done.
I have no love for FA at all, but I feel like its potential successors are hoping to coast somewhat on the fact they're not god-awful PHP monstrosities with rotten administrative cores.
One major regression is the problem of discoverability. The homepage is transient, and journals telling me about artists generally aren't useful because interest isn't transitive. What other ways are there to find out about people? On FA, there's "browse", which lets you define some crude non-tag-based metadata and see what's there—crude, but effective. On Weasyl, the best you've got is searching for tags and hoping for the best, which would be fine if tags were moderated, but they're not—third parties can add tags to a work, but they can't remove any the uploader used.
As a result, people used to using the tags as a snippy-comment box like on FA (where tags are literally meaningless) will pollute the namespace with dozens of one-off tags which do nothing but waste database space. Any sophisticated tag management has to go through the administration, and I don't know whether there's an actual workflow for tag moderation or if it's all ad-hoc SQL queries applied to the underlying database. How would Weasyl's administrative team go about merging two tags together under a third name, or outright removing a tag that has no reason to exist?
I really hate FA, and I really wish that it were feasible for me to stay here exclusively as opposed to staying on both sites, but it feels like my art gets more attention over on FA, whereas here people rarely notice it. I'll always use Weasyl and I think it's the superior site by far, but I wish other people would realize that. :/ I think people, by and large, get discouraged by the smaller audience here, even though interest is ultimately tantamount to this place becoming as active and successful as FA. It breaks my goddamn heart when I see people's outrage die down and the regular flood of people that abandoned FA for this site go trickling back. I joined back during the Zaush thing (you can infer why) and I never, ever would've gone back if it weren't for all those factors.
(It is pretty satisfying to see Dragoneer find new and inventive ways to utterly wreck FA's PR, though. shhh I'm not petty at all)
I love Weasyl! FA can blow me. But if Weasyl had:
(a) a way I could post a flood of submissions without notifying my followers ('cause moving here would involve ~700 such things, automated through the handy-dandy Chrome tool)
(b) a way I could be notified of new comments on a submission that is in my Collections (I do not plan to re-post any art that's already in my Collections)
(c) transfer the "permission to post" from FA to Weasyl (i.e., I got permission (sometimes implicit) to repost all this art on FA as part of the commission process .. but I did not get permission to post that art here)
(d) softer language about posting submissions of art that are actually commissions and not my creations
... then I'd move in a heartbeat.
As it is, I've moved a batch of things over here, but then stopped because of (a), and (c), and (d). I guess I could do them in small batches, hacking away at it a little at a time until they were all moved, skipping the ones already in my collection, getting permission for the ones that are not... but that will take months, maybe a year or more. It is daunting.
At a minimum I should post my new stuff here first, or get the Collection offer from the artist. Then later post on FA also, but only if the artist does so first (thus, if they've already abandoned FA, I don't have to bother).

i dont know... at this point, it's not looking too good for me staying... i'm just so sick of the fact that they go and do things without consulting the users. if "all they do is in favor of the fandom" than why are they doing so many things wrong, because they CLEARLY haven't listened to what the people are saying. they've made too many distasteful decisions, and have made so many of their users uncomfortable.
