5 reasons I don't stream... by Swandog

Well, the #1 reason would be Basic Inability: I don't have a webcam or mic at the moment, which really must be amended asap, because I miss annoying my buddies (aka, the people who put up with my nonsense) on Skype. >_>

#2, Hardware Damage Prevention: I refer to myself as the "Slowest Artist in the Fandom" for reasons. What takes a normal artist a week to do, takes me months, and what takes other artists months takes me years...and no, I'm not exaggerating. Anyone watching me work LIVE would be comatose after 5 minutes, and their drool could short out their keyboards, and they might sue me for damages. I simply don't have the budget to cover all that.

#3, Personal Ethics and Financial Responsibility: I am an extreme perfectionist...I regularly erase sketchwork and linework I've already spent hours on, or rip out threads I've been sewing for hours, or pull apart wool I've been felting for hours, just because it doesn't look "right" to ME, and I'll do this over and over. It might (and probably would) look just fine to normal (aka non-OCD) folks, and they would likely detect absolutely no difference in the new work from the old work. I simply don't wish to be responsible for the psychological damages that might occur to my watchers (and psych wards are also rather expensive as well, and I really wouldn't want all that on my conscience), or the hair implants they'll need after ripping all theirs out by the roots. I would have to limit my watchers to bald men exclusively--and very stoic ones at that--and I don't know too many bald furries (isn't that an oxymoron?). But hmm...Patrick Stewart would be nice. Yes, I might actually dare to stream for him.

#4, Feline Intervention: Yes, I have a cat. A very bratty, nosy, clingy, attention-seeking cat, who simply refuses to let me work more than 5 minutes at a time before she personally has to inspect every little thing I do: walk all over it, sniff it, chew on it, bat it with a paw, headbutt it, shed hair all over it, and ultimately, lay on it...whilst stretching out to cover any remaining working space on my desk. She also lays across (effectively immobilizing) my mouse arm, presses random keys on my keyboard (thereby sending cryptic, and possibly offensive messages to my watchers), and makes a point of trying to stick her tailtip up my nose.

#5, Familial Concerns and Concentration Issues: I also have 2 energetic kids and a very silly hubby, who regularly romp through the den (where my comp is, for now), make a lot of noise, and drag me (or at least my attention) away from my work, and I would have to pause the stream on a regular basis for this, driving my watchers to potential distraction. Or during a lull in the stream, I might even forget I'm streaming at all, and wander off aimlessly without notice, or do something inappropriate for my viewers, like pick my nose or fart. You just never know...So I feel it's best to simply avoid traumatizing you poor folks, and therefore, I don't have any plans to stream.

Thank you for understanding. :)

Dang, then i can't act all silly when you stream, and emberras you muchly

You just had me chuckling and giggling to myself for the majority of this journal. :D Not only because it was so amusingly worded, but also because of me being able to relate totally regarding being the "Slowest Artist in the Fandom".

I am horrifically slow, both when it comes to composing and recording. I am actually very, very slow with anything I do... which is one of my typical bovine traits actually. I am slow in all the ways a normal cow usually is. :)

    this made me giggle!

the whole cat thing I can attest to!

stream or no stream, I love your art the same!

  • Link

I say stream so I can see you again :P pfffffffffft

  • Link

I hate streams. Lol I find them awkward and creepy when someone else comes in and watches adult work of your ocs being drawn.

Your excuses are understandable and it's nice to see an artist admitting they take awhile to do art.

      Eww. I almost never stream at all, much less stream adult stuff, but the few things I HAVE done of that nature, I've done as private streams. It would be freaking creepy to have random people watch something that personal. Like watching somebody shower or something. c.c;

Yep, those all sound like very valid reasons to me. #3 is me to a tee also.

Mostly the reason why I don't ever stream (or plan on it in the future) is because I can't be bothered to get the hardware, and because it would be immensely distracting to me. It's not like I care if people watch me when I draw, but if I can't space out and just work, I'd get nothing done and the only thing I could ever produce during a stream would be silly half-finished doodles!

    Journal favorited, for obvious reasons.

All very valid and reasonable things! Of course "because I choose not to" is also perfectly acceptable.

  • Link

If it helps any, I can very seriously relate to number 3. I can get very discombobulated during the sketch stage on most of my work - depressed fits and the like, and usually wind up abruptly halting streams on account of it. If the linework isn't going well, my OCD kicks in, and I start to perceive it as a battle between myself and the paper. I try to do the very best job I can regardless of what I'm working on, and I am easily upset if things aren't turning out perfectly. Rarely will I attempt to stream sketches. I am only confident in my marker colors, and will usually only stream that portion of an image on inked, cleaned linework.

We can fart together! I think me being a derpety derp derp I'd prolly sneeze and fart at the same time and Bubi would then jump on my head, and then I'd scream and fall down and come back to the cam, with like ...huge scratch over my face, and knock down the mic! Or just slip and fall over the whole pc with my cheek facing the cam! <3

  • Link

I respect your choice, but pretty much none of these would make me enjoy a stream less and I've seen all of these things, I think, on existing streams. Also, I consider #4 a definite positive! I love seeing people's kitties when they stream!

  • Link

that's why I normally stream for friends. They are used to my OCD perfectionist ways that me going over the same area of a drawing makes them go "eh". It's also another reason I don't have a mic, cause I curse a lot, I yell at my "kids" which are my dogs or ferrets, I sing randomly with music and very off key (damaged ear drums I think would be pricey to pay for), and sometimes I just say some very random s**t. Though I'm sure a few of my friends would be amused by it nonetheless. But I feel ya.

  • Link

Except for the last one, these are all the same reasons I can't /won't stream. I'm afraid 7 long hours of watching me re-detail some character's nose hair would just be a terribly boring waste of bandwidth.

  • Link

OOooooo dear, we are so similar then haha xD

  • Link

This was a surprisingly amusing read =P

I actually would like to stream (at least showing coloring sessions--currently I still draw and ink the old-fashioned way, and don't have a decent drawing table, so it'd be awkward to film. Mainly I just don't have the proper software (well, and uhh ... right now a computer, since mine recently died during a power outage, and I'm on a laptop--but I meant in general =P).

I also clear my throat a lot in real life (allergies, I guess) so I'd worry about that getting on people's nerves.

If nothing else, I'm thinking I might try filming it and just putting it on YouTube, so that I can edit out any boring parts.

    • Link

      I work traditionally. I just temporarily tape my webcam to my desk lamp and then move the lamp arm around until it has a good view of the screen. =D It works pretty well. I just never remember to start up the streaming software. c.c;

      • Link

...err, sketchbook, not screen. It's late and I'm tired.

      • Link

See, I don't really have a desk at all right now that I can draw on. I usually have my drawing pad in my lap with the top leaning against the arm of the couch, or the edge of my computer desk, depending on where I'm sitting =P

That's not a bad idea, tho--maybe something to keep in mind whenever I have a drawing table again.

  • Link

    All very valid reasons! :)

  • Link

I can totally relate to this!

I changed from stream to multi streaming, something like Google Hangouts and Tinychat, this way Im not the only person streaming as I sometimes stop to talk to someone. More relaxing to mutlistream/network with others
