Sparkyopteryx

Water in it's purest form is not only crystal clear but reflective, like an organic mirror. Similarly, it signifies creativity, thought and the subconscious on the purest level. However, like the deepest pools it can also be dark, impenetrable and mysterious. Traits associated with water are flexibility, introversion and imagination.

Earth

Commission 1 of 3 for teiirka depicting my unicorn witch Selvamille. Like the last ones, I had pretty much full artistic freedom with these, and one day while brainstorming ideas I hit on a series signifying the three cardinal elements of the Druidic tradition (Some would say that fire also should be included, but in many Celtic spiritual practices, fire is a fundamental product of air and life energy instead). I decided against being as representational with the elements as possible and instead try to focus on the meaning or the essence, hence why I kinda rendered the water as more glass-like than anything. I kinda just let my pencil wander the surface of the paper when doing it. Very relaxing....

Originally I was going to go with the medieval alchemy symbols for each element, but since these three elements are all a variation on a triangle, I found that the hard lines and edges just didn't suit the softness of this picture, or the wispy energy of the upcoming "Wind" piece, so I went with a freeform abstract shape instead. Also, I think I'm getting better and better at drawing horse heads...

Done on 9x12 Strathmore sketch paper with various graphite pencils, blending stick, erasers and a splash of peacock blue Prismacolor pencil. Character belongs to myself, while image rights are jointly owned by myself and the commissioner.
