ow my arms by Ziblie

So I shoveled part of the drive yesterday because the plow went by while Lisky was at work and shoved 1.5 feet of snow into the mouth of the driveway, and his car always gets stuck if there's more than 3" of snow.

I did not previously know this for sure, but I have now confirmed that my muscles are made of soggy Kleenex.

After 30 minutes of shoveling wet snow YESTERDAY, it now hurts to extend my arms in any direction. >: It hurts to even squeeze Lisky when I hug him I mean come on

/sigh

So does anyone know anything about what to do with sore / stiff muscles? Because I don't.

    put ice on them XD

  • Link

uh... i got through 6 inches of snow fine... it's slush/ice that my car dislikes >|

    • Link

      sure.

  • Link

Ugggh snow-shoveling is the worst. (Speaking of, 15-20cm predicted today, whee!)

For sore muscles, usually I take 1-2 ibuprofen right after I finish doing something that I'm pretty sure would make them sore and it helps prevent a lot, though taking ibuprofen when they're sore works, too. Other than that, massaging and icing the area are about all you can do, I think.

    • Link

Yeah, I'm doing some stretches too... I just feel very dumb for being so sore after like half an hour of shoveling xD

      • Link

Hahaha I know, right? Every now and then I'll be sore after, like, taking a couple loads of laundry up a few flights of stairs and feel like the biggest slug. XD MUSCLES WHY DO YOU BETRAY ME.

  • Link

Gurl you need to get your work out on

    • Link

Aw man, I know >: I felt really good after shoveling too, which is what makes this even more vicious.

  • Link

seriously though. depending on how bad it is. if its just a dull ache or burn when you use the muscles in your arms take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen (if it is safe for you to do so) to reduce pain and improve your ability to move around. Do you have any Swelling, bruising or discoloration? only feel pain when you put any exertion on the muscles in your arms or do you feel intense pain even while at rest? If you experience intense pain all the time you might have a more serious problem like a torn muscle and it would probably be a good idea to seek medical attention. but yea. id suggest trying some anti-inflammatory drugs and ice and see if that helps. usually works for me.

    • Link

It's not like at-rest bad but as soon as I move even a fraction it's quite uncomfortable. xD I just took some ibuprofen so hopefully that'll help.

I think maybe I need to toughen my body up a little.....

      • Link

haha might be a good idea XD couldnt hurt anyways. Hope the ibuprofen helps.

  • Link

My muscles are now as close to being Scooby do floppy noodle arms as can be. You have my sympathies!

    • Link

      NOODLE ARMS UNITE

      • Link

It's just as bad (maybe worse?) When you didn't USED to be a noodle arm. Now you do basic things that you can't before and you're like "HOOOOOOOOW?!"

  • Link

    Noodle arm people unite!

    • Link

Ahaha I didn't see that reply up there until after I hit submit X3

      • Link

Hhahahah clearly it is because of our UNITED SOLIDARITY as NOODLE ARMS.

  • Link

Aww. <:' I really pray that you feel better soon. <:3

    • Link

      Ahh, thank you <3

  • Link

Steaming hot soak in the tub, followed by a loving massage from your boy.

The pain is your muscles getting stronger. (sort of. it's actually microscopic tears in the muscle fibers, which will heal to become stronger)

    • Link

He did give me a very nice upper back massage (which weirdly helped out my arms?? body I don't even) a little while ago <33

      I think a hot shower will definitely be something else I do today ;A;

  • Link

this....this is why i avoid shoveling at all costs XD sometimes, i think it sounds like fun and a good idea....and then i greatly regret it x.x

    • Link

Yup. :T I was like I'M HELPING! ... BY RUINING MY BODY FOR THE NEXT THREE DAYS

  • Link

Nice hot soak in the tub and massage, with Lisky doting over you every need should help with the tight/sore muscles.

Daily stretches or yoga, or something of that ilk, will help over time.

    • Link

Yeah yoga is probably a good idea anyway. I should find a class. I'm just a little afraid to go because I'm so very inflexible (in anything other than my back).

      • Link

I sort of had the same thoughts when I was thinking about going back to the gym: "I'm too out of shape to go in there." Fortunately I finally went and it has meant a world of difference.

Go for it! U KIN DOOO EEET! We all have to start somewhere. Besides, if you play your cards right it can mean more hot soaks, rub downs, and doting Lisky, ;-)

        • Link

          Oooooh good point.......

  • Link

Try some stretching exercises. Learning to do push ups also helps with building upper body and core strength. :)

    • Link

I can't do pushups HAHA oh man... A quirk of how I've learned to use my body through my life has meant that I actually have zero core strength whatsoever (I use my back muscles to compensate). I have a noodle body.

      • Link

You were blessed by the Flying Spghetti Monster. :P

  • Link

I can relate with the shovelling. Just got done doing some and the snow's still comin' down!

    • Link

Man, yeah! We got 6" overnight or so, ruined our plans of going out for the day xD Lisky's forbidden me from shoveling today, which I guess is good, but ultimately makes me feel even lamer.

      • Link

Obviously you need some time to recover! Don't worry 'bout it!

  • Link

Everyone's mentioning the right anti-inflammatories to take and all that, but I'm not seeing anyone say the most important part:

    EAT PROTEIN!

AKA: Eggs/fish and bananas as an easy source. :)

Not like a single huge amount, but a scrambled egg or two several times a day, or some salmon, figure about 1g of protein for every 10kg/20lbs of your weight for today and the next few days, as right now your muscles are sapped and trying to rebuild.

    • Link

      Eggs eaten! I will be strong some day ;A;

      • Link

....When I was young I ate two dozen eggs every day to make sure I got large.
NOW THAT I'M GROWN I EAT FIVE DOZEN EGGS
        SO I'M ROUGHLY
        THE SIZE OF
        A BAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGE

The plow, worst enemy of people with driveways!
I totally hear you on the annoyance of having to shovel up the plow remnants.
I live on the bend in my street, so even if it's not that bad of a snowfall, the majority ends up right in my lane.

    • Link

Oh, that's just awesome, isn't it?

  • Link

Stretches help, There are a lot of different ones yu can use to get some range of motion back, but unfortunately it's time that yu need s the muscles need to heal.

A really hot bath will help, as long as you keep your shoulders submerged. it will hurt once you slide into the tub, but soak for about an hour and you should be fine. some stretches to try. hang off the top of the door still to stretch your shoulders.

Put one hand on the back of your head, put your elbow against the door frame and turn your body slowly away, so that yoru elbow is stretched behind you.
Then do the same with the other arm.

Go to a table and place your palm on it, Then lock your elbow and slowly put your weight onto the supporting arm, and hold it for a few seconds. do the same for the other arm.

    • Link

      Will those stretches work on biceps in particular? o: Those're the ones I'm having the worst time with ;A;

      • Link

for Bicepsm lock your elbos and twist yoru wrists a bit, then just massage the ith your hands. But yeah not a lot for Biceps.

  • Link

Yoga and a heating pad with ibuprofen.

    • Link

Ooh, a heating pad... I like the way you think.

      • Link

I got one for an old back injury (the disc was strained and the muscles were locking and over working themselves to hold me up). I still put it in my bed and use it after work. Just make sure you get a cover or an old flannel pillowcase for it and that it has an automatic shut off. It can totally burn you if you leave it on too long and I know i have fallen asleep on mine.

  • Link

I...would probably be in exactly the same boat, so I'm the wroooong guy to ask. >.>

    • Link

Yeah well, not like you have to deal with it, Mr California >:C

      • Link

OH MAN JUST LOOK AT ALL THIS SNOW walks out in shorts in the middle of December

        • Link

          i hate you
          so much right now

  • Link

    Oooooh stiff muscles..>

Epson salt in warm bath water

Also rubbing alcohol on your arms would help too! (Had been through the same thing)

    • Link

Rubbing alcohol? Really! That's a new one. I'll have to try it!

      • Link

Rubbing alcohol on the joints really helps out, especially if it's spearmint scented!

  • Link

Yeah, Ibuprofen. But that's not very interesting, so I remember reading in a magazine years ago that if you leave weed stems to steep in vodka, you can rub it on sore muscles and the THC disolved in the alcohol goes straight in through the skin and releives muscle strain very effectively. No idea if it's true; could well be as accurate as the Anarchists Cookbook stuff about smoking the ashes of banana skins (don't). I think it was in Bizzare magazine though, and they only published the most beleivable hearsay.

Let's just go with lots of chocolate, baths and NOPE.

    • Link

Hahaha! Yeah, I have more ready access to ibuprofen than I do to weed stems, but thanks all the same. ;)

  • Link

A hot bubbly bath with drops of essential lavender oil?

    • Link

How shower with eucalyptus soap was nice too! (My muscles are still sore today)

      • Link

        ....Hot even....

  • Link

A bit of rest should do you good. Hope they get better soon.

    • Link

As of this evening, they're sort of starting to get less sore :D

  • Link

Warm bath with an epsom salt soak <3
