Brainstorming ways to keep Weasyl active? by Jotaku

So I've seen some concern going around that Weasyl is slowly dropping in activity! If we wanna keep it going, we as a community have to take action with our own hands, right! *m*

So first off, I wanted to remind people of this journal and the other journals linked within it:
https://www.weasyl.com/journal/24818/let-s-help-weasyl-out

SECOND LETS BRAINSTORM!
I've seen suggestions of somehow getting a number of artists together to offer free art in some sort of organized means to promote activity--like after a certain amount of being active being able to enter a raffle.

I think some sort of collaborative art project could be a pretty good idea, too. If there is a community that is constantly working together to make fun things, I think it would attract others.

Maybe some sort of user-run special events? Y'know, unrelated to the site staff or anything, but just happens to take place here? /strokes chin

IDK GUYS GIMME YOUR IDEAS
Maybe I should create a thread in the forums to discuss possible plans for those who wanna work together to do something? :O

EDIT: I am currently making a forum post to better plan out/brainstorm ideas. Anyone interested please make forum accounts now and I will post a link as soon as it's up!
Also why i'm a bit slow w/ responding at the moment... ;;

SECOND EDIT: Ahhhh I am actually going through the process of double checking what I want to do will be okay on the forums. The forum thread may end up being posted sometime later today or even tomorrow depending on when I get a response.

To be honest the main reason my primary art site's still dA is for art groups and RP - I would suggest some organised art/RP group but Weasyl unfortunately doesn't support it and it'd be a tremendous pain in the ass trying to manage, hahah... Maybe an organised Pixiv Fantasia -esque event that can be managed via tags?

    • Link

Oh, I've heard of the Pixiv Fantasia thing before... but I never really knew how it works? How is something like that organized, could you tell me about it? : o

      • Link

Ah basically um... Well the story changes year to year but it's basically a fantasy genre art event that happens over the summer. One person posts all the information about a world/setting and breaks it up into factions that're at war. You choose a faction to support and then draw things and submit them into the Pixiv Fantasia tag, the number of favs / pageviews / comments you receive all add up and count towards the faction's points (iirc, anyway), and the faction with the most points wins each battle.

It's actually pretty different from English/dA based RP events or groups... I can get more into it if you're interested I find the differences pretty interesting...

        • Link

Wow this actually sounds really fun! I think something like this would be an excellent idea. SO YEAH if um you have more information and time to link/share that would be awesome! :D

This is the best English source of information for PF afaik - it can probably do a much better job of explaining! Basically by entering a character you're by default giving blanket permission to other people to draw fanart / draw art of your character interacting with theirs - it's much less RP oriented and much more art oriented than English-speaking groups in my experience. People're also free to draw anything they like and come up with storylines / setting specifics / mythology / etc. at will, it's great.

I'd be totally interested if you're planning on setting something up hahah, I love stuff like this.

            • Link

After reading through all of this HECK YEAH I wanna set something like that up!
I'm still organizing a forum thread (which I'll post a journal for when I get it situated) but I would like to maybe discuss it and its perimeters there with others who might be interested in helping out! :D

          • Link

            I second this idea = u =
            sounds very fun.

    • Link

Well, I'm kinda running one but no one really cares xD And it;s also like 80% RPG. But yeah, RPs and stuff are really nice, it's just hard to get word out there

  • Link

The key ways honestly are just to be active. Comment, post stuff, buy stuff, all that good stuff. Remember that it's a community, be communal!

    • Link

Yes, of course! Which I do my best to comment and post as much as I can, too. But I think it could also be beneficial to look at other ways and projects, as well, to better create a sense of community! :)

  • Link

I think a thread in the forums is a really good idea, and I think you should link back to it here so we can contribute!

    • Link

HMM I'll see about making one then!

  • Link

Artists actually leaving other sites is something that's necessary.
Also, I've deleted out most of my gallery on my former mainsite and in the descriptions of uploads post a link to the Weasyl submission where I do post a description and invite commentary.
Only offering commissions through Weasyl is another way, even if one is active on more than one site.

I like the idea above about doing something Tag related, making up some sort of contest/meme (like the witchsona thing over on tumblr) that's Weasyl only?

    • Link

It's hard for a lot of people to 100% leave another site. I know a lot of people trying to do it, though. And I'm hopefully on my way to at least leaving FA.

I think a weasyl-specific meme would be a pretty cool idea too! Just WHAT OF is the question ahaha

      • Link

I actually went and made a raffle thanks to your journal! <3

  • Link

    it really deserves more attention than it's getting;;;;;
I think that holding different varieties of contests would be pretty cool...
maybe weasyl could begin aiming for a larger crowd than just the furry community... like, it being for anyone but while still being furry-based, if that makes sense.

    • Link

It actually isn't even a furry site! It IS a site for every sort of artist. <:

      • Link

but what I mean is that the general population here seems to be furries,,, I don't think I can find the right words to explain myself, nevermind xux
        I'm not good at explaining
        imsorry

        • Link

Oh, I know what you mean. I think it only feels like a lot of us are furries here because a lot of us are after that whole.. FA exodus. I can definitely see perhaps advertising more to the nonfurry types would be definitely beneficial to Weasyl's growth.

    • Link

I think this is actually more harmful than good for a small community. There are many furries who are turned off by non-furry art (to the point that when I posted human works here or on FA they receive far fewer favourites and attention than furry pieces). Likewise, many non-furries are turned off by furry art (as evidenced by DA's crowd. That site is just SO MASSIVE that there are enough of any one community to glom together, but furries still get a lot of hate over there and most of the furry artists i watch here or on FA do not post their anthro/furry work to DA). By trying to include everyone you will end up spreading yourself too thin and actually appealing to no one. The reason furaffinity IS so successful is because it is exclusively furry, and has cornered that market extremely well. People are coming here because they're trying to leave FurAffinity, they're looking for FA, but better. If what you're offering is DA, but shittier, you're not going to win any crowds over.

Its about being a niche community and I think they should focus on that, and let it thrive in a creative way.

  • Link

I definitely suggest creating a thread in the forums so that maybe you can potentially reach others who might have ideas other than the folks who follow you!

    • Link

Yes! I'm working on the sign up process right now!
I'll make a thread and post about it shortly!

  • Link

I need to be online more. i honestly love this site.. just like i have sooooooooooooooooooooooooo many notifications on here.. lol i am up to 2000.. same with fa. as i have not be active.

  • Link

I've tried to keep a "Weasyl first" policy going. Check this site before any other, comment and favourite here, try to do business here over other sites. When I have commissions (since I do post the ones I make), I post them here first, usually by a day or two. And I suggest that people do the same as much as they can.

I'd like to say that artists could try to do the same, but I realize it's a PITA to try to manage two galleries at the same time, which is why there's tools like Waxpost. Plenty are already doing Weasyl-exclusive and Weasyl-first deals, although I'm not sure how successful they all are.

lulu mentioning pixiv's Fantasia is a pretty good idea. Hell, FA has Fat Bunny Week, after all. Things that get some communal themes and interest running should spark some interest.

And, of course, we have to make sure the Weasyl staff works at improving the site. It's good already, but they can't rest on their laurels!

    • Link

From what I see, the staff is definitely trying to work on improving the site. They've got a long projected to-do list, and I've heard of some thing they're currently working on atm. Just with how quickly the staff handled the DDoS the other week, I am definitely hopeful this site will progress. :)

Otherwise, definitely already following what you suggested!

  • Link

what i really liked about an idea on fa was, a commissions account? people make commissions sheets and uploads it and therefore people get more exposure! until groups are officially settled on here i think it'd be a swell idea for those that struggle with finances uvu

    • Link

I think this is also a good idea. I thought about making a journal for people to post if they're interested in commissions, but something like this could be a really good idea, too. It could be managed by a few users and maybe have weekly or monthy 'open' posts. :O

  • Link

    • Link

      This is a great idea!
I'll be making a new journal when I get the forum thread going, and I'll link to your project! :D

  • Link

I like the Idea of the Fantasia thing/contests, If anyone wants to hold a art contest thing, I can lend my skills as a prize.

    • Link

Thank you! I would really love to organize a fantasia project through weasyl, for sure. Contests could also be a really good idea for the future, so appreciate you're willingness AAAAA

  • Link

Weasyl is seriously such a nice site. Even disregarding the recent art site fiascos, I would stay on weasyl simply because everything feels so comfortable already! My gallery is still quite dead but I'm quickly becoming more active here!

I'm really at a loss for ideas.. but, I'm sure if everyone keeps activity alive, it'll catch on to others! After all, enthusiasm can't be forced ^^ We just have to keep this community alive and strong! But of course, the event ideas would be a plus! I'm totes game for them~

    • Link

Yeah I REALLY like Weasyl so far. I feel there's already a good sense of community and people wanting to help out and work together here. I really enjoy it, and I don't mind the site's layout so much either. There are some small improvements that would be nice, but the site IS still in beta, and the people here make it far more enjoyable already!

  • Link

It would be sad if weasyl would be less active. Atm I am still experiencing plenty of activity form the ppl I follow. As for myself I try to be more active here and send ppl to ym weasyl as much as possible. No I dont get as any comments or favorites comparing to fa, but I wont give up! I WONT!!!!!

A collaboration project sounds like allot of fun too

    • Link

The slow down hasn't seemed so bad to me, but I follow a good handful of people. I have seen several journals of people being worried/feeling the site HAS been slower and seeing other sites (like dA and FA) pick up. I figure a preemptive strike would be best!

      I like a lot of the ideas I've seen thrown around here already. I definitely want to see about getting the fantasia thing up and running. Working out some other ways to collaborate on projects would be super awesome too ; o;

      • Link

Have been skimming the fantasia thingy, and it indeed sounds very interesting! ♥ might have to go look into more information about that! I would love to see my fursona Suu involving into some rpg fantasy setup and defending here fraction!

  • Link

Conbadge Exchange started up over here too, (will start in March). I always join that and do a badge for someone once a month, you get one in return and it helps people be aware of different artists.
    https://www.weasyl.com/~conbadgeexchange

    • Link

      Oh this is really cool!
When I got the forum up and going and post about it, I will try to advertise this as well : )

  • Link

I try to comment and interact on here like a mofo, personally. The more active the community, the more active the site. This is why I REALLY want to see Group functionality show up.

    • Link

Good!! And yes, i think having groups could be a plus too : O

      • Link

I have a group of my own from FA that I am DYING to export over here, let me tell you!

  • Link

I'd like to see a hub where writers and artists can get together rand maybe collab on comics, illustrated series, etc. One thing I've noted on most sites is that there is a definitive SPLIT between the writing and art communities.

    • Link

Oh this could be a really good idea, actually! I've seen a lot of umm... fanfiction projects where they either write fics from art, or art from fics.
A project of sorts could be built from something like this. Like, say, having users of both writing and drawing coming together, randomly being assigned and having to work together to create something. Like a sort of contest? You could have rounds and such.. aaah

      • Link

"Fan-fiction". Uh huh, is that what the kids are calling it these days? :B
But yeah a hub where people can come together and make something great would be awesome. I've sorely wanted to write a comic for an artist, but it's difficult to find someone 100 percent dedicated to that. Most (all) have more or less jumped on all gung ho and lost steam.

        This would solve that issue.

  • Link

I don't think it's really showing down. I think what we're seeing is a tapering off of posts as artists finish posting their backlog of art from other sites. Still seeing as much new art from people regularly, personally.

That's not to say that more community participation (already an awesome high point at this site) shouldn't be encouraged! Hell you got me to respond. ;)

    • Link

I haven't seen it too much, either. But I've seen a handful express concern. Always best to jump on something before it become a problem, right? :D
I've got the thread set up, so I'm hopeful there can be some good brainstorming and project creation to boost everything up!

  • Link

I don't know if you do this already but have you tried saying that all new art will be available on Weasyl only? Like commissions you make will be posted on Weasyl, but the commissioner can post it on FA if they want?

Also I think that Weasyl could benefit from groups like those on deviantart.

  • Link

    something imma try:

    1. post everything here

    2. wait a few days to post the same things on other sides (smaller rez, maybe watermark)

    3. have a link in the desc linking to the full size on weasyl

  • Link

Well, I think it would be a great idea if we could fix the inbox here, so that we could just click an x on it and delete it instead of having the click the ones we don't want, click "Remove checked" and "Yes". Though that's something more to IMPROVE this site then to keep it active..

But I'm not as active as I want to be, just because there's this app I got for Chrome where you can cross-upload your pictures to weasyl, but it doesn't work for deviantart yet.

    • Link

Ohh this is something completely different to what I was trying to bring up.
This sorta thing could be suggested on the forums--I think they have a thread going for site suggestions (But I think something like this has already been suggested and is on the list to fix up)

And that's a bummer that app doesn't work. Hopefully there will be ways for it TO work later. @w@

      • Link

Haha, yeah, sorry XDD That was all I could think about at the moment X333
