"You should not be here!"

Sparkyopteryx

I've been plugging away at that aforementioned project but damn I wanted at least something polished and finished for the month of January, so this happened because bats are always relevant. I'll be opening ballpoint illustration commissions just like this piece! Stay tuned for a journal tomorrow regarding them...

Not technically a new character as her concept has been in my head for some time now, just the first depiction of her. A newly reincarnated Tenebra when she eventually must pass on, her end expedited with the tragic help of her Bloodbonded partner. This version of her (named Ounalara) is much bigger and more aggressive than what she was in her previous life. This is from a specific scenario in her story after she emerges fully-formed from the Xibalban River of Blood, her ire directed at just about anything she thinks is a threat, which is everything. She's just a little crazed, frightened and confused is all, honest.

Been drawing Xibalban bat monsters for some years now but this is the first time I've drawn one of the vampire variety. Much fun! Can't get enough of how amazing their teeth look and how complex those noseleaves are. And to think, there are so many artists that never draw them "right." Such a shame. This was also somewhat of an experimental piece in seeing just how well my felt pens and pigment liners interact with ballpoints; I'd say it was a success, it just needs some fine tuning. My old scanner would not have picked up the different ink properly, but my new one once again has performed amazingly.

Done entirely in colored ballpoints with accents of black felt pen and pigment liners on heavyweight sketch paper. Cropped slightly smaller than 9x12. This took about oh....12 hours all told off and on over the course of several days. Character belongs to me, her race the Xibalbans are a creation of MisterMidnight

The crosshatching on this is delicious. And it's bat like so that means it's already awesome.

Crosshatching for me is like drugs; once I start doing them I can't stop. Probably why I like pencil and ballpoint so much because those media are excellent for crosshatching.

You cannot ever have enough bats.

    Oh.

Oh I love everything about this.

I had a...sneaking suspicion you might be one of my followers that would love this piece.

How ever could you have known??

I am shocked, shocked I say, to find you here on a piece like this.

She looks glorious, you always do my bat-monsters such amazing justice. I think I'd be stoked to one day see every variety depicted, if that's even possible (If you account for "misbreeds" then that might indeed be impossible). Looking forward to more of her, I really am.

You know what I'd also love? To see some of my imagining of Xibalba rendered one day, I should really sit down and elaborate on their Capital City when I next write about them. Which I really need to do. I've got this feeling the Xibalbans will be my greatest creation in years to come.

I'll definitely be wanting to draw her again in the near future; I absolutely adore drawing bat characters. I wish I could get commisisoned to draw them more!

I've been really, really wanting to explore more of them and their society. Ever since you mentioned last year doing that project. Not just themselves but their cities and culture. We really should focus more on that this year...

I could always find ways to encourage you to draw them more for fun, perhaps? All the same I too would rather see you get bat-commissions all of the time haha

We simply must, at least a little bit. There's a lot we already have that needs to be put down, and I bet more would flow in the process.

Yeah you could always do that; I'm sure it wouldn't take much effort.

Indeed. My detail-oriented side would definitely want to flesh out a lot of minor errata as well, such as city layout and architecture arrangement.

Holy hell. This really is the most beautiful thing.

    HOLY--

Okay, wow, good Lord this is stunning. I love the details, the tufts of fur, especially those wrinkles and folds in the wings. You really outdid yourself this time!

Many thanks! I'm inclined to agree as well; every ballpoint piece I seem to learn a new trick, so each new one just seems to get better and better...
