Fatigue by Deriaz

Fatigue

Deriaz

Get back, get back up.
You gotta get back, get back up.
You got a whole stadium on their feet.
It's not about victory or defeat.

A bit of stress relief art. Seeing things on paper helps me sometimes. I've had a rough month for fatigue, motivation, self-esteem/body image, etc. But thanks to some really nice pep talks, two videos from Kienen Lafferty, and incoming vacations/events, I feel a small fire starting under me. I feel the rebound coming! This image was a good indicator of it starting.

It's also been a while since I've drawn Deriaz, and a few people wanted to see him again. I thought this would be a nice way to draw him. As well as the second of two commission variant examples for a "sketch". He isn't always drawn the most flattering or in exciting scenarios, but I hope you appreciate seeing him again all the same!

Enjoy. Critiques welcome as always, despite the roughness here.

    This is really nice! :)

Just out of curiousity, as I use traditional media 99.999999999% of the time...what kind of pencils do you use? :)

Right now I'm using some General's Kimberly Drawing Pencils, specifically 2H, HB, and a touch of 3B. If I struggle with an edge, I sharpen it with a .7 mechanical pencil -- nothing fancy there for brand, just something from the dollar store works just fine for me.

      Thank you!!

        You're most welcome! :)

I always see so many brands of pencils at the supply stores, but I like using my mechanical pencil a lot too. (Which is funny, because I was afraid of using one for almost 15 years..................)

No fears, only dreams! I could never tell the difference between pencil brands, so I just sort of buy what's on sale. I don't buy them from dollar stores though -- I tend to notice the graphite smudges and stains a lot more on those ones. So I shell out a tiny bit of money, but only to whatever says it's currently price cut!

(I should clarify, MECHANICAL pencils from the dollar tree are fine. Actual, like, normal pencils, I don't. I don't know why, but that's been my experience with them -- mechanical is great from dollar store! ... Normal pencils, terrrrrible.)

There are sometimes good products and sometimes bad ones at the dollar stores. I don't like their writing pens either because I've had many break and leak.............!

But I buy pencil sharpeners there. lol As much as I go through them now with colored pencils...it's cheaper to do it. :)

Personally I love it when artists depict their characters in situations that aren't always "flattering and exciting." Makes them feel more alive and real and not just 2-dimensional individuals trapped in some kind of vacuum. I love how you rendered his face here especially.

Thank you!! The face felt really nice to me as well -- I wasn't sure if maybe I went a little overboard on the scales, but it felt "right" so I let it be.

And I'm right there with you. Deriaz, from the get-go, has been meant to be a reflection of me for all my strengths and faults, as well as a character I can use to try and self-motivate myself to be better. Heck, even his species was chosen due to it; for an example, I knew iguanas were quiet, and I'm terribly quiet, even a bit mute, around new people. (I later learned iguanas apparently have no vocal chords, which made the choice perfect.) Sometimes he does get drawn as a silly macro lizard, or an adventuring knight or rogue, but at his core, he is me. I just need to learn how to use him to explore concepts and questions about myself and improvements I'd like to make! That will come once my fundamentals are rock solid, I'm sure.

I like the hoodie in this one, or is it some of those bathing robes??? Not sure what people wear in the morning.

At the time, it was a hoodie. Though honestly, I haven't changed much -- I'm in a big dumb robe even in the middle of the afternoon, as I respond. So I guess things haven't changed since I drew this! (No hood on this robe though. Man, wish it had one.)

      Thank you!

That's still nice! And you're welcome.
