Thanks to you people and ... Folder-Structure by Rotarr

Hrrm~I feel so at home at Weasyl right now. I love it! <3
It's been said many times already, but I'm so glad the activity here finally took off :)
I love the people that are active here and I also love the motivation i get from the site in the last few days~
Also I wanted to say thanks to you people, for the honest critique I asked for and also the nice words you always share with me (not only on the art, but in general). If know me a little you know that i constantly hate everything i do and sometimes even without good reason. Don't want to talk too much about this...
Just thanks for helping me seeing the "good-side" in things <3

Besides that I wanted to ask your opinion:
Is my Submission-Folder Structure too complicated? Do you find your way around? Also i'm curious about how you manage the Folders here on the Site :)
Mine currently it looks like this and i fear i overdid it a bit. (Yeah, i think a lot about this things...)

COMMISSIONS
-----Adult
-----Badges
-----Illustrations
PERSONAL ART
-----Adult
-----Fursona Arts
-----Illustrations
Trades & Gifts
x Fanart
x Old Art
x Scraps

The X in front of the bottom folders is so that they appear last in the list, since it's sorted alphabetical.

Thanks to you people and ... Folder-Structure

Your folders are set up about as complicatedly as mine xD
Aka in my opinion, I think it's a good set up. It makes it easy to navigate if you're really looking for One Specific Thing~

    • Link

Thanks :> In that case...i like your folder-setup too XD

  • Link

I was just about to update my folder structure too! Such a coincidence - but definitely one of Weasyl's best features. I think your structure looks nice and organized!

    • Link

Thanks :) It helped to look at many many other peoples structures. I also think it's fun to think about these things.
It's just a little exhausting if you change the whole structure and then you have to sort all the art again...from scratch DX

  • Link

I don't think that's very complex - it's very logical and easy to navigate. :)

  • Link

I don't think it is too complicated.

What would you put in the "Illustrations" sub-folders though?

I need to come up with a folder system which works for someone who only gets commissions and doesn't do his own art. :P

    • Link

The big Folders "COMMISSIONS" and "PERSONAL ART" stay empty and everything that doesn't fit the other subfolders goes into Illustration. That's the plan. You can actually take a look in my submissions to see what i mean :)

And ... well...if you only have Commissions you don't have to deal with the problem of keeping private and commissioned art separated. that's handy XD

      • Link

Yeah, but I do like to organise things. I just don't know how to organise them.

  • Link

I'm glad things are having a positive effect on you. The activity here and close-knit feeling is nurturing. n___n
I have my folders organized in a bizarre way that bothers me and I wish I hadn't done it. XD

I have Toony with sub categories - Painting - Creepy - and Estranged.. I think that's it. But there is cross-categories between all those that kinda bugs me. xD I love the folders I just wish I utilized them more sensibly. It's good that you put a lot of thought into yours. I don't think it's over-done.

    • Link

I like your setup too :) It's very specific for your art and portfolio (not general like mine) - You can read the Folder names and get an overview of things you like do draw. That's cool too!
But yeah, i had the "one submission - one folder" problem as well first. That's why i tried to keep it as general as possible so it always can always fit only one category (I categorize by "what it is" rather then by "what is the topic")
I just tend to totally over-think this kind of things (that's why DA is very exhausting for me - so many possibilities fuck O_O)

  • Link

Keep the folder structure that way, then we'll all know where to look when we search for a specific thing... As most or all commenters above have stated :P

  • Link

I think the folders you got are very succinct! I might actually try something similar. I'm afraid some of the ways I want to go back and set mine up have the potential for misfiling. Like what if I do a speedpaint that is also adult x.x haha

    • Link

Yeah, that's why i didn't wanted to sort the art by their medium/technique. Best thing is to sort it either by content OR medium...mixing both won't work, since you can't have one submission in two folder.

      • Link

        That's so frickin useful!

  • Link

That looks reasonable to me. You might not need to separate out ADULT stuff as Weasyl does have a content tagging system. When then eventually implement a SFW function (it's been talked about on the forums) - do you really want an empty ADULT folder hanging out there for all SFW people to see? "Gee, I wonder what's in there?" LOL

Otherwise your scheme makes sense to me. The only thing I see others doing is a COLLAB folder, but you could put those in your Trades & Gifts folder I guess.

    • Link

I totally need a collab folder soon, yes :) And yeah...good point about the Adult stuff. Will think about it nods (it's just that...I'm to dump for tags o_o)

      • Link

I should have said rating system, sorry! We have to rate all uploads, so if you set it to Explicit then people who aren't logged in or shouldn't see it won't. But thanks, glad I could help!

  • Link

That seems like a fine folder structure to me! And can I just say, on the subject of Weasyl positivity, how great it is that you can have structure like that here? :D

I'm kind of an art whore as much as I am a creator, and I'm combining my by-me and for-me FA accounts here (and I swear I have better organization here in my one account than I did with two over there!) so my folder structure looks something like this:

    BY ME
    ---Stories
    ---Drawings
    ---Icons
    ---Photography
    FOR ME
    ---Drawings
    ---Stories
FEATURED (because I wanted to make a separate folder with the "feature things in this folder" option and exactly one entry in it just so I could always feature my novel on my front page; it would have gone in By Me/Stories otherwise)

  • Link

    That looks reasonable!

My personal method for folder structure is an acknowledgement that different people probably watch me for different things, so I try to divide them up based on interest. The music, food, games, and furry smut are all separated.

  • Link

    I like your structure! It's very easy to navigate and separates commission and personal work nicely. You've inspired me to take a look at my folders and do something similar now. ^_^;

  • Link

Your folders aren't complicated, I find they are to the point like they should be =)

  • Link

I only have one folder right now, 'Poetry', but I might be adding additional ones later. As for how you have yours set up, I think it's very well done. It looks to be very easy to navigate and find my way around, I like it! =3

  • Link

I'm a bit slow on the exploration of the site, I haven't taken the time to figure out folders, but yours look pretty intuitive to me!

  • Link

That looks like a good organizational scheme to me :3

  • Link

I love the idea of having folders. Question: is your scraps folder a folder you have specific settings for that keep its contents from appearing on your followers' feeds? If so, has it been effective? I have been really gunshy about uploading anything in-progress or that would otherwise be considered of a scrap because I have been trying to keep it from being the first image people see when they go to my profile and I sure dont want to flood people's feeds with my rough work.

    • Link

Jab, it works perfectly fine. Everything i upload there is not shown on the startpage, my submissions or notifications (you can change the settings in the folder options) - and i upload sketches there ;)

      • Link

Thanks. Since commenting here I did figure out how to get my Scraps folder to work properly for me. I now feel less like Im gonna piss people off now.
