I'm liking what I see so far. Lets hope Weasyl kicks off well, I'm leaving FA as soon as it does.
It has literally everything FA does, except done right. Then on top of that, incredible new features and helpful staff. FA will not survive well once Weasyl kicks off well, unless they seriously overhaul everything they do.
Except the fact that if you're a commissioner, you're not allowed to upload the art you've gotten from other artists, if said artist decides to upload the same picture onto Weasyl.
I like that better though. I've seen a few times where an artist was commission for a piece, uploaded it, and got 17 favorites, then the person who ordered it uploads it and it gets several hundred. That's not crediting the original artist and it's not really fair.
If you add a piece you commissioned from someone as a collection, anyone who follows you or the original artist will see it; the only difference from FA is that the artist actually gets the credit they deserve.
Very true.
But it could be easily fixed by transferring/copying the stats from a commissioned work.
Say, when you upload an image, you get to place a "Parent URL", which will get all the +favorites and views the commissioned picture gets on someone else's page. Or simply search for a duplicate image on Weasyl.com, and automatically share the stats.
And it also depends on what you consider as "credit" to the artist. If it has "This was drawn by X," it is crediting the original artist. But yes, I get that popular characters could get way more views than the artist.
But what if the people who view the picture are only interested in the character, and not so much in the artist's style who drew the picture? On FA, those who are interested enough to the style will check the artist's page.
There are a lot of views to this, and mine is simply that the Collections in their current form aren't the best way to do things. For example, it seems to only show as a little folder on your profile, and doesn't even get a full-view on the profile page if Collections is all you have.
It's beta, still. Things will probably change, compromises will be made, etc.
(Just my 2 cents.)
I like your idea! I had an idea kinda like that, which Weasyl could easily implement with their tagging system.
When an artist uploads a picture with a character, and they allow permission for the commissioner to repost it by adding that person's Weasyl username as a tag. Then, when the commissioner views it, they have a 'repost' button available to them since they are tagged in the picture. They can add their own description as a footnote beneath the artist's description, and it is posted to their profile for their followers to view. Every subsequent view and favorite is attributed to the original post accordingly.
This could even work with multiple users; if there's a piece with many characters in it, the artist can just add a tag for ever user present, and they have the option to repost it. This would make it so the additional posts would not add duplicate files to Weasyl's server, and the artist would reach a maximum audience.
What do you think? Should I suggest it to the staff?
I personally won't be leaving FA until the Upload Policy regarding commissioned work changes around here. <.<
It's just not worth it for commissioners if they decide to go by the site rules.

Although we have this system, users are still allowed to upload pieces made for them/that include them, as long as one of three conditions are met:
The upload in question that was made for you is personal, and you wish to set friends-only permissions to it
The original creator does not want to put it in their gallery
The person who made your upload does not have a Weasyl account, although we strongly encourage our users to invite those artists who made works for them to the site. If they decline the invite, then go ahead and proceed!
If the artists have it in their gallery, you can just take it from their gallery in put it in your collections. Otherwise, just post it in your gallery.
Yes, but the thing with Collections is that it doesn't show up like a normal submission.
I don't know -exactly- what it looks like on your profile, but I have a feeling that it just shows up as a folder right above your shouts.
Well yeah, but it's still not as good, and it only shows the very latest thing you've added on the front of the folder, not all of your recent submissions like those at the top of your page, and like I pointed out before, doesn't show the latest addition as a big full-view on your profile page.
It's nothing serious enough for me to just say "screw it" and stay with FA, because FA has so many problems that Weasyl doesn't. But the upload policy is helping me keep one leg on FA's side at the same time.
