In Memoriam

Sparkyopteryx

I'd like to keep this brief, but I'd at least like to share the story behind this. Before my brother left us, a long while back he approached me around our birthdays (His was literally the day after mine) about me designing his first tattoo for him. He loved how I did my detailed ink art like in my "Sun Owl" and "Fiddle Dee Filigree" pieces, and one of his childhood nicknames was "Rooster Cogburn" because he had flaming red hair (a trait both of my bros share). "Badfinger" was a more recent name from a couple years ago when he hurt his thumb while he was at a job (he was a framer and carpenter).

He was always so busy with work and such and even though he was over frequently, I never had enough time to pin him down and finalize the design. Earlier this year I was intending to get it done for him as my birthday present to him for his 40th. I never got the opportunity, since he took his life this past 4th of March.

I sincerely hope that if he was still here he'd love this.

It looks awe inspiring and I'm certain he would have loved it, don't see how he couldn't. It's so thoughtful too.

Thank you. Even though it's too little too late I knew I couldn't dishonor his memory and leave this piece an unfinished idea.

First, amazing design! I love the stained-glass, Gothic, strong graphic of this! Second, while I never knew him, since you did and he liked your art, I am sure he would have been thrilled with this as a tattoo. I am very sorry that he had so much he could not deal with (I have attempted suicide many times in my life so I have a tiny bit of insight on the subject) and that he lost the fight. I hope you and your family find peace with it sooner than you think you can.

Thanks, that means a lot. He was definitely working too hard and gave all of himself to make everyone happy, but he didn't have enough left for him. He was the rare sort of guy you felt honored to know.

It was good to revisit this theme and motif after so many years. I've been wanting to do a whole series like this but always put it on the shelf. I think this year I'm going to get more of them done.

Yeah, he'd like it, who wouldn't?

Haha, indeed. Yeah I know he would have liked it and I can even imagine what he would have said when I would've first showed him.

I know what it's like, and this is a wonderful thing to have done.
