Duck Stamp Comic by Nambroth

Duck Stamp Comic

Nambroth

Hi all! I made a quick comic about the Duck Stamp. If you can't get the bigger version to load so that it's more readable, here it is at full size! http://featherdust.com/duckstamp/duckstampcomicweb.jpg

I made this comic as a way to get a bit more attention for the U.S. Federal Duck Stamp Program, and to promote the idea that it conserves a whole lot more than just ducks! I only had time/space to include a few species, but in reality thousands of species (of both plants and animals) benefit from the stamp. 98% of every single stamp sold goes into the Migratory Bird Fund, which provides funds to do things like buy lands for our National Wildlife Refuge system! Legally, no other entity or part of the government may take even a single cent away from this fund, so it is actually used for Good.

It is not a postage stamp, but a conservation stamp. It raises millions of dollars every year, and to date nearly 7 million acres of habitat have been conserved just from this program alone.

Please do feel free to share and spread the word!

Cute comic. Hope those poor duckies get their population stable.

Fortunately most populations of waterfowl have stable numbers in North America right now. It's the other animals, plants, and ecosystems that the stamp helps protect that we are rooting for!

        But I like birdies!

        • Link

Yes! It helps hundreds of bird species. I don't have numbers but any bird that depends on wetland or grassland ecosystems benefits. As do any that feed on insect matter that need such ecosystems (and so on).

Poor snail, in the end he had to duck the issue....

Man, this is actually really helpful, because I had no idea what the duck stamps were for. This clears a lot of things up - it sounds like a great program! o:

I had no idea! I always thought it was just like a Ducks Unlimited sort of thing! I will definitely look into buying some!

While Ducks Unlimited does buy a lot of stamps as you might imagine, the actual Federal Duck Stamp totally separate entity and is the longest running federal program of its kind. :)

That's so cool to me! I also was impressed seeing it was started with the help of Franklin Roosevelt! How cool!
Definitely going to see if the Cabela's near me sells them

Also is there any way you'd let me share this on my Facebook account?
I study Zoology and my friends are always eager to hear new conservation things from me and I think this sums everything up and is very attention grabbing :3

          Yes, please do share! :)

            Awesome thank you so much!

Hehehahaha, I bet the government hates that 'can't take a single cent' bit XD
This is really well drawn, so I salute you!

"The government" doesn't hate anything. Certain individuals that work in government do, as do certain other private citizens. "The government" makes the entire program possible. You couldn't have public or private land ownership without "the government."

As kesarra mentioned, some individuals have surely attempted to lobby for changes to the law to make the funds available for other things, but to date none have succeeded. Everyone directly involved in the Federal Duck Stamp Program know what an important and vital gem it is, especially in a world ever more pressed for habitat conservation.
