Sadly many will never understand this concept

  • Link

This is especially true with Weasyl's terribly small thumbnails. It's a pain in the ass to see if something is good enough to click on.

    • Link

Those are set by the artist. It's not really the site's fault. Though, giving people the option will inevitably result in this I suppose.

  • Link

Thank you for this. I personally look at most pieces that come through from artists I like and follow. After all, I'm following them because the offer something I want to see but it is very frustrating to see a thumbnail that looks like a headshot or a bust only to have it revealed to be something else entirely. I like to see what the artist did and I think it is a disservice to constrain every image to a single face...

  • Link

The problem is the site can't handle non-square thumbnails which forces everyone to crop their images, as nobody draws square pictures. If thumbnails were just smaller versions of the whole picture by default, nobody would bother cropping.

    • Link

That's not a problem if people fit as much of the image into the thumb as possible in order to give a clue as to what the image is about. That's controlled by the person submitting a picture.

  • Link

So much this. FA is great for browsing since they made the preview/thumbs much larger (and sorta broke the custom thumbnail functionality) while Weasyl's biggest downfall is it makes browsing art a pain in the ass, so you can't discover new artists/submissions as easily.

    • Link

Maybe Weasyl can eventually correct this problem without breaking something.

  • Link

That may be true, but my pictures are mainly portraits and pictures where nothing happens, so I didn't really find beneficial to show more of the image since it would reduce the visibility of the character inside the thumbnail. But indeed, whenever I do and action picture, I shall show more in the thumbnail, but I really like to crop it as much as I want, it's a special feature that i really liked of weasyl.

  • Link

Eh... If it is an actiony thing that you make a huge thumbnail for, it will just make the thumbnail impossible to decipher (because they are small) and, therefore, require you to click anyway.

  • Link

This. So much this. I feel like I've missed so much good art 'cause coming from FA I feel like anything with only a face displayed is an icon/avatar.

  • Link

Agreed. Hence, why I often make my thumbnail just the size of the whole pic. XP By the way, what is that in the bottom left corner? :3

    • Link

      Frowny face sputnik. :3

  • Link

I bet if everyone contacted the support team about the issue, with a link to this submission (and its comments) it would get fixed real quick. Imagine 2,141 e-mails (at least) all asking for the same thing.

    • Link

Short of disabling the ability for people to upload a custom thumbnail entirely, there's not much that support can "do". Even if the thumbnails are on the small side, how an artist chooses to crop it is completely up to them. I think that's what actually brought up this post in the first place?

      • Link

True, but: larger thumbnails, support of non-square thumbnails, and defaulting to a reduced percentage ratio of the actual dimensions of the image are something the site does control.

        • Link

When suggesting better writing formats I did see 'fix thumbnails' on the list of frequent requests or current problems.

  • Link

Makes the search essentially useless, or at least, something of a pain ^^"

  • Link

I agree. That's one thing I wish they'd change. I don't want to go through and click on every submission just to see if it is something interesting, or something I even want to click on, or not.

  • Link

thanks for this! I hate it when people only show the head or other small detail in the thumbnail, then when I click on it, it's a gross fetish submission that wouldn't be expected from the thumbnail shown, and there isn't even a warning in the title! I need to start using the block keywords feature here >w<

  • Link

Wisdom this is. Preach it you should.

  • Link

edits all her thumbs as soon as she gets home ...

  • Link

Yup, I've already unwatched a few artists because they copied their whole galleries over from FA in this self imposed exile and micro thumbnailed everything. Tedium works great to destroy any interest.

  • Link

I grew to hate those who do this long ago. It's just upsetting to be forced to click on something just to see if there is something worth inside.

Treat watchers like idiots, only the idiots will remain watching you.

  • Link

i'll start focusing on the boobs

    • Link

      A noble compromise.

      • Link

it took a lot of persuasion let me tell you

  • Link

A MAC DONALD SPACE STATIONNNNNNN ??!1

  • Link

Why not show a larger preview when hovering the mouse over a thumbnail? Or do it like Google Image Search.
I was really hoping Weasyl could do something like this because creating a thumbnail is a pain in the a** anyway.
(At least how I see it)

  • Link

You're right... I should probably go enlarge the view of a lot of my recent thumbnail editing. >_<

  • Link

Valid point. I am gonna change some thumbs.

  • Link

I think if they implemented some kind of hover view that showed a reduced scale (non-square) preview it would solve a lot of the problems.

  • Link

    PREACH!

  • Link

    Amen, amen, amen.

I find thumbnails very annoying for this reason. I want to see a full version of the image in miniature, not a clipped thumbnail :(

  • Link

I must be the ultimate-troll or something then, 'cos I've done this to all my submissions and never knew people disliked it :I

  • Link

THANK YOU. This is why I hardly watch anyone here or on Inkbunny... I usually end up not clicking on cropped thumbnails at all which means I could be missing something good, but I don't want to open every single submission when I'm browsing...

On IB you can click "show original thumbnails" to get that.
