Squishy alien for reasons

FamiliarAlien

I did two more quick images lately. This one actually served a purpose while I elaborate here but the short version is it annoys me when aliens in sci fi show biases towards certain things that make no sense given their unique differences in biology and culture. I drew a random individual of a species that's usually very skinny with a larger waist line to basically explain how ginaga see fat vs. how humans see it.

Also again this was a fast image so I do notice some errors in it. definitely still trying to learn how to draw faster but without the image having to be really super simple and ridiculously cartoony for that to work.

So enjoy!

This makes a lot of sense, I especially like how your Tumblr post explains the actual evolutionary purpose behind the differences. Looking at this fellow, it seems like even the distribution of fat in ginagas is a bit different to humans. I quite like how the squishier head-tail looks! Anyway great job with the image overall, I think you found a nice balance between drawing faster and not oversimplifying it. =)

yeah their fat is distributed a bit differently actually. I think its most noticeable on their arms where only part of them have fat not the entire length like it would be for us :U. Same with the neck not getting fat the entire way. their fat also ends up seeming a little flatter in the front because of their posture. Notably because I'm not that great at drawing their legs could have been made a bit chubbier especially so they wouldn't appear flat towards the front. If I ever draw this individual again I'll be careful to make sure those are as squishy as they should have been!

Yeah the arms were one of the main differences I noticed because of the thin wrists but big hands. I think that's cool, it helps differentiate them as a species. =)

well now I know you have a tumblr...

That I do... even though I hate the site sometimes lmao. Its fine its an ok platform for blogging about my work every so often. I have a main blog too (the one linked there is a side blog). My main blog is mostly just me reblogging things like art, animal photos and shitposts. I try to avoid getting into the more serious stuff, try being the word its hard to avoid that stuff on tumblr (and twitter).

I've always liked how your xeno-people have completely different cultures and anatomy, rather than simply revolving around what humans see as acceptable.

thank you. Yeah when I first started to develop out my sci fi one of the first thing I did was ask myself "what do I see in other science fiction that rustles my jimmies and can I avoid it in my own?" and went to work on that. Couldn't avoid everything because some tropes exist just to make the story easier to tell but things like "everyone is monogamous for some reason!" and "species that don't have a proper concept of gender are still sexist because no explanation given" are things i definitely could avoid.

There's a trope for almost everything! That's exactly why TV Tropes exists: to help people avert tropes they dislike, and play any favored tropes straight.
