About Patreon by Iridium

No, I'm not getting one.

But I have been reading a lot of artists complaining that there are too many people out there pledging the highest amount, taking everything for free, and then cancelling their support before they have to pay. Which is a really low thing to do.

I also know nothing about Patreon, so I have no idea if what I'm going to suggest will work. Instead of allowing access or sending people stuff immediately after they pledge their support, is there a way to wait until after they pay? Because usually you get stuff after you pay for it. So instead of giving access or stuff away right away, do it after the first confirmed payment? Can that be done?

Anyway, I thought I'd offer up my two cents.....

Oh yeah, totally. In fact, that's how I do my Patreon, at least when it comes to the much higher tiers anyway.

The thing about Patreon is that rewards aren't really given out automatically; pledge rewards are doled out as soon as the page owner doles them out. So if a Patreon creator (like me) really wanted to, they could just wait until all pledges are processed for the month, and then they can hand out their patron rewards. The thing is though is that a lot of people are basically relying on the honor system; in that it's the idea of as long as you promise to give me this money later, you can totally get your rewards now, and unfortunately, a lot of people figured out that they can easily get stuff for free by just canceling their pledges at the last minute, right before their pledge gets picked up by the system.

Anyway, just figured I'd let you know about Patreon, in case you wanted my thoughts on the matter. =3

Someone I know posts previews during the month, waits until the pledged amounts are taken, and then e-mails everyone directly a link to the image pack. Seems to work well enough, but obviously not flawless.

no one has any honor anymore

As long as you can keep a proper track of Pledgers, what you're suggesting has the most potential to work.

As far as I know, there's no way to charge people immediately upon signup. Patreon is a great idea, but as with any new system, people will find the weaknesses and exploit them.

A way around that might be to charge a subscriber immediately upon signup, then hold the money in escrow until the end of the month, when it's all sent to the artist as a single sum. Of course, that could cause problems because Patreon would be running credit card charges at arbitrary times throughout the month, rather than all at once. And I don't know much about financial regulations, but effectively acting as a "bank" for their users could present some legal hurdles. That's the only way I can think of to prevent the abuse that's happening now, though.

It'd be a good start if we could ban people from our Patreons.
