Fake Patrons, Yep, Knew It by EbonyChimera

http://pingagirl.tumblr.com/post/128209067837/fake-patrons-yep-i-knew-it

I already had a sneaking suspicion the new patrons that were pledging $50, but had no sort of activity on them were trolls attempting to fluff the monthly amount. Just now confirmed it with all of these declines.

I’m going to start pruning declined payments of new Patrons. If you’re legit and you get pruned, please let me know, and I can take your payment directly.

    What is wrong with people

    • Link

I think some folks want highest access to top stuff so they can all copy and save it to their hard disk.... without paying for it.

As I've told Kayla before, Patreon needs to take a monthly payment immediately from new patrons as an act of good faith on the patron's part.

Currently, I think Patreon locks payment from the patron as soon as a new piece of art is uploaded but I could be wrong.

Otoh some folks will just go out of their ways to find a way to get their payment declined.

Yeah they did it to me too. Patreon tells me that they are going to change their billing system to advance-charge pledges, but it won't roll out for another couple of months.

It needs to happen sooner rather than later. It's unfair to artists to have to put up with this.

I've seen several posts with people delivering past the first month, so that stuff only goes out to those whose pledge went through. Also, people delivering outside of the website, to make it harder for stuff to get stolen over to hosting sites.

Yeah. There's a whole website called yiff.party that some people are uploading a bunch of furry patreons' stuff to, by taking advantage of this exploit. My Star Fox animated series patreon was recently added.

Yeah they got me and a ton of other people, too, apparently. I thought it was weird that three people all decided to pledge at the highest reward tier within weeks of each other.

Sure hope Patreon does something about this to prevent future bullshit.

Reply from Patreon regarding fake patrons:

    Hi Misterfredrykphox,

Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a note and for your incredibly kind and considerate words.

I'm so incredibly sorry to hear that you are dealing with false patrons. We take this very seriously.

We're working on rolling out a new payment system that will charge patrons immediately upon pledging, and declined patrons will not be able to see Patron Only posts or rewards - they will be forced to update their payment information in order to access that.

We hope to have this out in full in the next few months, and it's going to help so much with patrons who are not pledging in good faith.

We love our creators, and we know we need to build something better for them...so we're going to, because of amazing feedback like what you gave me.

Thank you so much for that.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to drop us a note at any time.

    I'm here for you.

    Warmly,
    Heather
