might be leaving weasyl by Jive

well, damn. so much for that, then.

if I do, I will let everyone know. could an art-specific tumblr, but their staff has been protecting kkk members... as much as I would really like to find and stick with an art site, I don't feel comfortable with how this... situation is being handled. no clue where to go from here.
sigh.

might be leaving weasyl

[being really fucking rude/handling being put in a difficult situation poorly]>>>actively deleting ferguson posts>>>>>>>stealing people's money and lying about literally everything and deleting ANYTHING & banning anyone who says anything bad about the site

    imo

so I think I'll be staying here. I'm optimistic, I want the weasyl staff to take this as a sign that they need to treat people's experiences as legitimate and work on how they think about those human fucking beings' real ass experiences. tho this could all be a pr stunt. still, that's the worst case scenario and still puts it slightly ahead of tumblr in my mind (as far as "how fucking awful are the people who run this site" goes)

I dunno, I think their explanation was reasonable. Plus, everything that Cisqur said.

    • Link

An addendum: their notion of "wanting to remain neutral" doesn't do them many favors. You know, the idea of remaining neutral as siding with the oppressor. It's rather disingenuous to say "oh if you were raped you should go to the police not an art site", because the person was explicitly warning the community that frequents said art site. This place isn't just some series of random images divested from any meaning or connection to a person, we're people.

I don't know how to feel about this, but again, what Cisqur said. This is DEFINITELY the better alternative to FA or Tumblr, in this regard.

I agree with this, too. I understand that remaining neutral has literally killed people who have asked for help, but I think that weasyl wants to separate itself from being a potential platform for an opinion they may not condone or a discussion they don't want to have, and if people absolutely have to use weasyl as that platform, weasyl has mentioned ways to do it (eg saying "there's more information on my tumblr", having your tumblr linked in your profile, and having the relevant information linked in the bio or the front page. it's not gonna be convenient either way but it's not impossible by far)

    I am staying.

What's not to feel comfortable about? They allowed the Journal to stay up so long as the User took down the direct links to their rapist because callout Journals are against TOS on Weasyl. Basically this person explains it perfectly: https://www.weasyl.com/journal/71386

Now let's look at FA, who has a convicted dogfucker and alleged rapist on their staff, and it's anyone's guess as to whether they actually fired the hacker or not considering he was a hidden member on the staff for an entire year before he was announced as being hired on. No thanks.

And then there's Tumblr, who deleted the Ferguson tag, and is censoring its users. Not to mention they are protecting the KKK. They allowed a convicted pedophile to post horrible things for DAYS before responding, but they protected the KKK? Yeah, I really want to give them my business.

And Weasyl? One of their staff members made a comment about how minorities shouldn't be listened to, and they fired him. They had a mod suspected for a breach in security? They fired them. A callout Journal was posted? The staff compromised with the User, allowing the Journal to stay up so long as direct links were removed, while allowing the user to have a comment along the lines of "check out my Twitter or Tumblr for more details" which is still allowing the word to be spread about this rapist without calling him out on an art site.

So yeah, I'm on Weasyl's staff's side for this. I think they handled this like the human beings they are and were MORE than fair. They're not protecting a rapist. They're not shaming the victim. They are trying to run an art site, and so far this is the safest I have ever felt on any art site. And I know many of my friends feel the same way.

You can leave if you want, no one's stopping you, but at least get your facts straight.

Considering all I said was that I was uncomfortable with how it's being handled, you have no "facts" to correct... I'm well aware of the journal and their ToS. There are many things about this and other situations that make me uncomfortable.
This is me wishing there was a perfect site, and being sad that Weasyl has disappointed me and ruminating on the pros and cons of leaving. There was no need for you to get huffy and tell me "no one's stopping you [from leaving]." I know that. Chill out.

3> I think that latter half was an oops. This is a repost response to another journal so they may have forgotten to nix that part?

        • Link

Whoops yes it was. I meant to only copy and paste the main points rather than retyping it all up :|

        • Link

AH okay, I was so confused. Thank you.

      • Link

Whoops shit I copy pasted from another Journal to save myself on retyping everything and forgot to delete that part out. Sorry!

As for wishing there was a perfect site, I hear you. So far though, Weasyl is the closest I've found. There is a lot less drama here and the stuff that does happen is minor in comparison to the major events on other sites. The staff is only human but they do their damnedest to make this a safe environment for everyone, including themselves by firing problematic staff that are a threat to the site, the other staff, and the users.

Don't see that happening very much elsewhere, is what I'm saying.

        • Link

No worries! I was really confused about the wording, thank you for clarification. I appreciate the input!

And yeah, it's closer than a lot that I've seen to being what I'd hoped for, but there's been more than just this one incident that made me uncomfortable. I will likely not leave yet, but if another site with more aware creators/staff doing a decent job, I wouldn't be opposed to another move.
I hope they learn from this and alter things to suit and protect the community. We'll see.

          • Link

They've been extremely good at learning and changing so far. Every time an issue arises, they are completely open and honest with the userbase, and they work with them to come to a solution. That they're willing to fire their own staff rather than protect them as Neer does with the staff he has that have performed criminal offenses, I'm more willing to stick around over minor issues.
