The Tide Changes by Noodle

Temporarily...

It seems like the only time there is ever any real activity on this site is when another well-known site is down, or unusable. Is that what it takes to move the artists/fans? I am no exception myself because I go where the activity is. I know that if I were to post a character auction here it would get no bids thought and I know as soon as that site is back up everyone will flock back.

I wish people would use this site more, but upholding more than one site these days is hard and the activity does all seem to occur on that other site still regardless of site quality.

It's funny, I remember the great migrations of artists back in the day from various sites, all it took was for a better site to appear. First forums, then Side7, VCL, DeviantArt, SheezyArt, then back to DA, then THAT SITE happened and it wasn't really a better site but people flocked there. Then it died for a year or two and people went back to DA, then it came back and once again, the fandom flocked.... and never left. Those rare times when it is down they appear here, or maybe on Nabyn which is mostly ignored (but honestly it's still in private beta, so it can't thrive.)

I can't even think of a way to change this issue other than taking down that site completely, but that'll never happen. It'll rise again from the grave like a zombie until someone really f*cks up.

It has become ubiquitous with 'furry' and since many people use it as their source of income...a big change like that is hard. The followings, the familiarity with the site, etc.

All in time, things will come around and hopefully the better run/designed/maintained sites will be on top!

    • Link

Yeah, I find it amusing that despite followings and business on other sites back in the day we were able to migrate no problem with no loss, but nowadays that seems impossible.

I actually really enjoy Weasyl. I admit I'm not that active here, but due to recent events I haven't been on the computer as much.

I agree though, it seems that the other site is quite popular and will always seem to be. It's possible cause change is a difficult thing. I find change difficult myself. I like Weasyl quite a bit, and am trying to be more active.

    • Link

Agreed, I love this site, it has so much to offer, it's sad to see it used as a backup.

      • Link

Agreed, I would like to see it used more then just a backup. It deserves better than that. In my own opinion.

What I plan to do is offer opening here first, and secondary across other sites. Let people know this on other sites too and simple 'Commission openings are offered HERE first, and at a $5 discount temporarily' might be all it takes from a handful if artists to get the mass going else where. I wish more 'big name' artists would consider a slight shift in priority posting. I know they want a more stable, better run site, but don't care to wait for a following.

    • Link

Agreed, I feel like we need more people to start doing that, but I will personally start trying to make the effort as much as I can. I doubt I could make too much of a difference, but I'll try! I could also link back here when I post or something.. hmm hmm...

I need to comment here more... I don't get feedback here but I can't expect to get it if I never give it either! It takes communication to make something like this work. I don't do art as much as I'd like anymore but I still watch, and it helps to be an active watcher.

    • Link

Same, we all wanna move I think.. but we're all afraid (???) to take all the effort to! haha

      • Link

I'm quite a bit more stoked about using Weasyl now that I found a bunch of the people I was watching through FA using http://projects.weasyl.com/fenderbender/ :3

        • Link

I wonder if that is why a bunch of people are watching my blank placeholder page on here...?

          • Link

            I would guess so!

  • Link

I'm so glad I can favorite journals now!

    • Link

hahaha. XD I LOVE THAT FEATURE!

I was TOTALLY having this exact conversation the other day with another user and it's so true. To be honest, I LOVE Weasyl and if I had to choose on one site, this would be it.

I did notice how finally people were filtering back these past few days, it's pretty great :> Buuuut i'll have to shuffle my butt back to that other awful, awful site. I hate it but that's where the community is :/

    • Link

Same. But it's like.. to actually sell something... I have over 2300+ followers over there as opposed to 200+. x__x

While I do like Weasyl and will continue to support it, I think it still has big problems. Weasyl will not yet be my main art site when I can't get visibility posting here (especially as a non-adult artist who isn't already popular on FA).

I hope it's ok for me to copy+paste something I've said elsewhere:

I’ve gone back and forth between Weasyl and FA and I do have to say that FA still has the superior site. FA is easier to browse, submitting images is a far smoother process, and everything is just much more visible.

I was an early adopter of Weasyl (donated money) and to this day I don’t see any noticeable improvements. The thumbnail system is awful - if you don’t size the same way every time on drawings they appear to change greatly in quality, it rarely gives a good idea on what the image as a whole looks like (which is lousy when you’re trying to be seen, exception being porn), and it slows down the submission process. I still find submitting to be slow, to the point where I have abandoned an account because it was taking so much longer to keep it up to date with the FA mirror.

Weasyl has some fantastic mods and admins, people who keep interest going and are overall great people, but from the outside it has the exact same development problems as FA. Changes are unnoticeable or unimportant, with small details getting attention over the needed large updates. This may be entirely different with people having other interests for the site, but as someone who has kept an adult art block up I keep getting bored and annoyed trying to use it. A website’s community around art can’t grow when submitting and viewing art isn’t fun to do in the site.

That said, I do want to see Weasyl grow into a great alternative for FA, but it has been over a year since the release of the Beta and I don’t think it can yet compete.

Hmm, have you posted that to the forums? I do agree that the submission process could go faster. Unlike you though, I have noticed changes since I got my account. I have requested things that have indeed happened or are at least on a to-do list. I am so torn on the thumbnail thing, while it's nice to have custom thumbnails, I guess it should be a choice in the submission process? Like... "check a box on this page if you want to make a custom thumbnail before submitted otherwise we'll just auto-create one" or something. It does definitely slow down submitting.

I, too, obviously, don't post any adult art and I wouldn't exactly consider my art super popular either. (I was far more popular when I was back in highschool for whatever reason even though my art kinna sucked.. more interest in clean art at the time? SUCH EXTREME HIGHSCHOOLER EMOTION??? I dunno.) Your art seems pretty damned awesome but there isn't much on here or much activity on here. I go freaking nuts with activity when I can on sites and try to put as much in on my end as I'd like to get in return. Maybe that's how I really get myself out there? I dunno. I pretty much have doubled my comments received amount as comments given on all my FA accounts.

      • Link

Yeah, I have definitely failed to bring up these concerns again recently enough. And about the second part, I definitely didn't mean to make that sound as whiny as it came out (upon rereading my comment), haha! All I meant by the popularity comment was that those who have preexisting fanbases can easily make a transition here because their fanbases will follow, but the lack of visibility in Weasyl hinders those starting from scratch.

It's cool! I understood what you meant. Yeah, earlier today I actually listed off a collection of things I thought of that need work on this site and this is what I came up with:

-The submission process could be faster

-Thumbnail making should be an optional step

-I wish I could copy paste tags

-I want character galleries like Nabyn (because I love that)

-I want the ability to make my page private unless you have an account and are logged in

          -It needs collection requests

-I wish I could change my featured picture

-I feel like the profile isn't really a profile??? Lacks userinfo/profile picture/fun stuff like that

-Needs more of a community obviously! haha

Some of those things actually come back to what you were saying. Not sure if it would necessarily help for visibility but maybe? I dunno! Also I guess the user-ads on FA are actually pretty cool imo.. they defintiely help for visibility! I click random shit on those ads all the time haha. I need to go to the forums and just list all this stuff.. hahaha

I've heard it said that FA only thrives because of a vicious cycle -- no one wants to leave FA because that's where all the art is, and no one wants to upload anywhere but FA because that's where all the watchers are. I think artists have the potential to break this, but it'd represent a risk for a lot of us. If artists don't bother to upload to a low-population gallery site like Weasyl, then there's no art to draw potential viewers, so they definitely won't gather. However, if the artists upload art regardless of whether or not it draws comments and favorites, then at least it's there and can gain notice, perhaps eventually drawing an audience. The problem is that many of us do business on FA (which still has the greatest potential client pool), so leaving also represents a financial dent.

      yeah, this exatly.

Here Here. I am enjoying the site. I forgot I even had one. But then again I don't use "the other site" that much either. hahaha. I am a sad noodle dragon for that.

    • Link

Haha. XD WELL, lets be happy noodles over here then. ;)

I wish it would be more popular too. I don't really like FA and all the pron that shows up there. If I had it my way, I'd stay on Weasyl and abandon FA because it doesn't have anything to offer. Let's face it, FA is about as basic as an art site can get and doesn't allow access to Groups, Folders, or Character profiles like DA and Weasyl can. Why on earth do we even stay there? Not to mention that it breaks down all the time and eventually will be like Yerf when they promised to put the site back up and never did.

Weasyl has a shot at making it big now that FA is busted. I wish we would stay here.

    • Link

Yeah like I said about, it's the population that keeps us there.

above* haha... tired sloff is tired.
