Weird art peeves. by Sparkyopteryx

Wanted to bump that other journal off the front page, and besides I was ruminating about this earlier and I thought I'd share. Caution: these are opinions, perceptions and feelings of one individual (being me) and are not being presented as real art theory or fact, so they should be treated as exactly that: opinions. None of these points are directed at specific individuals either, but are drawn more from certain overall themes or trends I've noticed. And don't take this too seriously either. :P

I'm going to start this off by saying that I love textures in art; they create a sense of immersion and interest for the viewer. With that in mind, something that really bugs me that is fairly prevalent in certain kinds of comic book art and especially manga/anime is when the artist colors and/or renders human skin as this smooth, glossy and almost rubbery sort of texture. I'm not talking about outfits either, I'm talking about the actual subject's skin. The weirder thing is that I see this most when regarding pin-ups, so the subject to me ends up looking like a half-sentient blow-up doll. UNLESS THE ARTIST ACTUALLY WANTS THAT, in which case that's a lot creepier and opens up a whole different can of worms....

MOVING ON.

This next little thing is more like a pervasive mentality I've observed than anything, that being "lineless art is always better and more desirable than art with line work." I know a lot of artists strive for rendering their art without lines because they believe that lines are a crutch and they view lines as "amateurish", and for some yes it can be, but line work as a whole should not be considered "bad" for art, and conversely once an artist learns how to incorporate it seamlessly with their style, it can enhance it.

Speaking of style....yes, we've heard the argument of "ITS NOT WRONG ITS MY STYLE" so I'm not even going to rehash that. This point is for how certain stylization or obviously unrealistic effects are stuck onto a realistic-feeling piece with little to no forethought. I'm not going to cite specific art for this and it's a little hard to explain, but I'll try my best. If the piece is supposed to be very representational to reality, it tends to ruin that sense of immersion if certain elements are not rendered with the same attention to style, either through laziness, ignorance or any other reason. Inconsistency of style I guess would be the best way to call it, namely when it is poorly used. I dunno where I'm going with this one anymore.

Oh, and BATS THAT LOOK LIKE DOGS AND HORSES WITH FACES LIKE MLP CHARACTERS. There, I said it.

I probably have a ton of other little things that I could list but I'd rather keep this journal from not reaching essay length and besides, I can't even remember most of them!

What are some uncommon or completely WEIRD things that bother you in art sometimes? List as many as you want! Try to keep it at least PG-13. :P

Bats that don't look like bats.

Anime traits on art that isn't anime.

    Uncanny Valley effects

And a whole host of other things you probably already know.

Oh, and tits that are all the wrong shape/proportion/etc.

The point about "anime traits on art that isn't anime" is a perfect example of what I was talking about in my journal about "stylistic effects that don't belong."

Also yes, balloon breasts make me a sad.

I dislike when people make Tasmanian devil characters, or similar 'exotic' characters, and then make it look like a wolf. And when called out on it, they get defensive like YOU'RE the idiot who doesn't know what a wolf looks like.

"But it's my style" is never a valid excuse. There's a difference between stylized rendering and a lack of education on anatomy, form, and proportion. I'm so glad I'm not the only one this bothers. Oh my goodness.

That coincides with my "bats that look like dogs" gripe. Because for many, mammals generally fall into a few broad categories and through....whatever reason or excuse they have, simply create variants from those categories instead of simply looking up the nuances of each species. I've always been a bit mystified with some artists that love animals, or anthro enthusiasts, or what-have-you, that seem to not care to delve into the vagaries and amazing differences of each animal. That is one of the main reasons why my fantasy characters and art are so heavily influenced by animals, is because of this dazzling variety.

Exactly! Honestly one could write their own rant on nothing but that topic. Fundamentals are important and necessary if you're going to be anything more than a hobbyist artist, not optional. Observation from life, repetition and above all, patience.

Yeah, I don't really like when people think lineart is "amateurish" since there are so many styles of lineart and some that are never meant to be colored. I also don't like that people think black and white artwork is not a finished artwork. I have done a few black and white that are really detailed and uses crosshatching and dots for shading which on Deviantart, some groups, people only want those images in the wips folder.

Huh, seriously? Admittedly I have not been privy to that kind of mentality very much, and I absolutely adore black and white art (perhaps a little more than colored work half the time) so that's kind of sad to hear. Although more than once I've encountered people assuming that most pure line art is there as their own personal coloring book when it's not, which is irksome. If it's any consolation, there are awesome dA groups out there that dedicate themselves to nothing but line art and greyscale, they're just not as common...

yeah the weird shiny look of anime/manga characters also bugs me too....they're less like humans and more like dolls, not helped by their crazy hair, lame fashion and gigantic soul-sucking eyes. o_o

I admit I have tried drawing humans....but they're all simplistic in a cartoony way. There's nothing wrong with cartoons I admit though, for funny scenes :p But I do want to improve my art....its just not helped by low self-esteem and lack of time :( I'm more a writer than a drawer.

Also yeah I think horses that look like MLP is weird. MLP and other fanart (e.g. Pokémon and Digimon characters) is just a lazy and cheap way to pump out characters. Just change the colours, slap on a mark in the MLP character, give it a cutesy name and you have a new character....its not fun really. There's no creativity in that :/
