Are names copyrighted? by LunaMoon

I though on a cool name for a specie I'm creating but it seems that there's an animated show that has the name on a place, I always search about the name/word I'm using for my personal stuff and only use names if they were used many times in many things but I only found the name being used on the show, so would it be copy if I use the name? I though on the name randomly... didn't know it were from something already, it doesn't seem to mean anything so I'm afraid it is an original word.

The name is Cantalupia, the show is Troll Hunters if you want to know

No, but you can do a check if it is trademarked, trademark law is more region spesific, which is why burger king isn't burger king in every country. Some are "First come first serve" in some countries (SCP containment breach got in a huge mess because of that with some fella in Russia)

(Heh, a small mansion near Napoli is called Cantalupi)

Same as what TailBit said--it may depend on the country and copyright laws. I know that in America--there are "cosmetic changes" they have to make to popular Japanese manga/anime, because of things. Like Roronoa ZORO in "One Piece"--for some reason the anime dub can get away with saying it, but in PRINT, VIZ Media has to change it to Roronoa ZOLO, because of the reason of "Zorro" being a copyrighted trademark.........so, they're using the somewhat known rule of "katakana 'R'" is also "L" in English languages.

I think it can be a tricky thing. The best way is to look and see how the copyright laws are in your country. If you're overly concerned--perhaps you can find a way to "differently spell it" to avoid any confusion or concerns?
