▲🌱DA's getting a Tag Blacklist! by Uluri

The Full List: https://www.deviantart.com/team/journal/The-Next-Phase-of-DeviantArt-Eclipse-803049136

YO, that one thing that's gonna save us from the front page is going to happen! Eclipse is going to have a Tag Filter. I only have one concern, though. It doesn't say it extends to Notifications/Gallery. Only search/browse. You know, the reason I'd use a tag filter was more so I could watch artists with a mix of content of where one type I might not like. To be able to make sure my watchers who don't like gore, but are okay with the other stuff can still watch me despite the gore art. (I get a lot of notes from you guys)

Also they're finally going to adjust their themes to not cause migranes due to their darkness/lightness. I don't get migranes, but Eclipse even effects me on that part. Especially dark theme. Dark theme sucks. It also sucks for my art. Can't see it good. Glad they'll fix it.

OH and I'm glad they're looking at categories again! I just complained about this, but Photo and Literature Categories need an uplift BAD!!! Digital/Traditional art got a great uplift but those two were forgotten hard core.

There's a lot of stuff on their To-Do list. Check it out. Also, Keep giving them your feedback! (Especially for the Tag Filtering. I want to make sure that it works good for everyone)

PS: FA, wtf. DA is getting a tag filter before you.

But you know it takes forever for FA to do these things! XD

I’ll have to ask my other friends who use DA how they like the changes. :)

They haven't added in the Changes I mentioned just yet. And eclipse is not out for everyone either. I have it though. I can say that it currently looks like "My first time making a website" kind of look to it how it is. Since they're going to change the Light/Dark themes I can't say much on them now, but they gave a lot of people migraines and dark theme didn't present certain artwork very well. I like havving a banner at the top of my page. You can't code anymore, which sucks beyond belief. Customizing my page is horrendous. Oh but they finally brough back the Commissions page where you can search all commissions available!!! I like that. Needs improvements, but it works. I like the watch area (deviations and journals) is seperate from Notifications (comments and favs) now. Everyone gets polls and status updates become browsable. 100x100px icons finally. A SFW button is always good. A lot of things like Journals are too big (not displayed in my screenshot). I still have to flip between classic and eclipse in order to do certain things. Categories are finally not a mess, but they have to fix some of them like photos and literature.

      Screenshot of my profile: https://sta.sh/04z9nqajehi
(Currently a small bug with my profile info on the right on alignment. They'll fix it soon. Happened with the latest update)

I think that it's currently overall less functional than the "Classic Green" and I hope that they can re-add in better customization.

I hope that they can make it nice for the "general user"--I remember when I had friends who were original users of the site and then they put in the pay-upgrade feature. Since we're all rather stingy by nature, I know part of that pay-upgrade feature lost them regular users (this was ages ago, long before I used the internet for anything than e-mail and I still had more snail mail pen-pals than touched a keyboard! XD) back then. But I hope they make the site better for the general population that uses it. I know so many more people still use DA more than anything else on the internet--despite many complaints and stuff over the years.

I see what you mean, looking at that profile. The brightness kind of "glares out" your nice and soft-colored works, too--it all blends into one eyeball-splash of color! It's not "bad" per se, but yeah..............you're right it could probably be a lot better with some small customizable tools that they don't actually need to put behind a paywall (I mean, Weasyl is nice and customizable in many ways for something open to the general public!). Given the massive user-base DA has, they should really make it a lot more user-friendly.......it could be a way of courting those into jumping over the paywall if they make it nice for the general user-base, too. :)

I admit...........I'm innocent to many art gallery sites, given I left FA (due to extreme bullying) in 2015. But I have lots of friends who use the many multiple sites, so I usually hear their woes as well as their joys of changes in the sites. chuckle

Poll and one Custom Box is currently for General User as well as apparently text coloring in certain places. Upgrade user seems to currently only have "Custom Display BG on Artwork" and "Multiple Custom Boxes". I have "General user" so I dunno what the Upgrade user statuses can actually do aside from what I said. I suggested User-made ad space like FA has but for the Upgraded members only so that there's actually a reason for Upgrade status now, because in all honestly there's now not much reason for it. They liked that idea.

I'm happy thet they're going to actually change the light/dark themes.
Ah, the Dark mode is the worst, light being barable. I should have included the dark mode, too. Profile 1 Profile 2 Light Gallery Display vs Dark Gallery Display and Nasty Text Boxes 1

My condolences that you ended up in a bully pit on FA. That's a really awful fate.

I'm on like, all the sites I can because I particularly find the communities have different feels and I break from each social wise here and there.
I can safely say what features I would love to see from all of art sites. One of the toughest features I noticed on sites is actually the rating categories. I'd like Newgrounds/Inkbunny's Category thing where its more of "Does it contain Nudity/Gore & violence/Adult Themes/ Other Mature" rather than general/mature/etc. I love Weasyl's Blacklist. It great. FA and Weasyl are tied with customization on Colored Text although I wouldn't mind small images. I like that weasyl's front page prevents spam <u<. Too many poeple mass upload on all sites. On another note, DA's commission outlook is finally looking good instead of how trajicly it was years ago where people sold art for 5 points.

I can remember being back on FA and not realizing that you could switch the colors of the background (well, between a blinding light blue and a super-dark grey, depending on your default and if you chose SFW/NSFW) and practically crying when people would use the white (or a bright colored one) text and I had that blinding light blue page and I couldn't read a darn thing! XD I think it took me a year to realize FA even had a limited amount of what customization it did. chuckle

I feel bad for all the friends I made that I had to leave behind, but unless you made a big production about it to the staff and somehow got them to listen to you--generally sending trouble tickets took forever for them to get to. I'd block one user only to have them open a new account and start harassing me again.............it was no longer worth it. I figured it was better to leave while I still had some small bit of my joy in art left. Despite leaving people behind I no longer talk to--I'm actually so much happier here at Weasyl. I like folders..........I like the banner thing. I like that you can even show or not show your "submissions" and "favorites" lineup on your top page. I've never set a "featured" piece, but it's a nice touch, too. And I especially like the being able to mark personal notes for "friends only"--that eliminates the harassment potential here on this site, for sure. I know that for people who commission that isn't ideal, but for people here for fun and enjoyment--it's a lot more helpful than keeping on blocking people who decide to harass you and stuff. I have fewer people I talk to on a usual basis here (due to people abandoning, coming back and abandoning Weasyl all the time), but I still have a few friends from FA I met and some new friends I made here. :)

I do kinda miss the two levels of "mature" ratings for things here though. wry laugh If it had been better defined, I think people would've used it more properly.

I totally agree on the "recent three submissions" limit on the top page postings being a good thing to prevent spam. I remember on FA I'd wade through one single artist's 20 YCH's advertisements (and even when they made that rule--people still worked their way around it!) to find actual individual art to enjoy on the top page! @_@

            • Link

There's also the Beta layout now. It's black..... But text is bigger and my eyes don't explode from not being able to read tiny text. It hasn't been worked on in a good long while, though, but its functional.

What? There's a friends only option for notes? That's actually really great feature I never knew about. I know some artists who get more popular tend to turn notes off anyways because of the shear amount of notes they'd get, so even commission artists would probably be alright with it. Some folks rather commissions via email instead. AH and who's to say you can't just make notes temporary off and friends only just to wait out the storm from some unsavory individual? I can see using it that way, too.

I wish popele wouldn't come back/abandon/come back so often. A community doesn't grow if you don't give watchers a reason to stay. I also think that Weasyl could do good with an FA ad. I made an FA ad link to My weasyl in February and the activity, watchers, and artists spiked during that time.

Ratings, so I'm a gore artists, and I really miss the extra level of rating, too. I honestly really hate that some of my art is either out in the open or locked behind a 18+ feature since... gore is niether. Newgrounds and IB have it good because if my art has gore, it is rated for gore rather than questioning if I should put it in general, mature, adult?? I think the Newgrounds one covers the rating best. Not much moderation needed with it being a list of Does this have gore Y/N? Is there Nudity Y/N ? Are there Adult Themes Y/N? Other Mature Themes Y/N? So if you can make it to no all the way down it ends up to general, but depending on the Yes's will rate accordingly between the higher tiers.. OH, and then super filtering that Inkbunny has, you can turn those categories off individually.

              • Link

One can always appreciate larger text--it's actually becoming more fashionable for people (at the Library I work at, anyways) to go looking for Large Type books, as opposed to getting the regular print ones (when it used to be people adamantly refused Large Type because that was associated with "getting old").

I like the "friends only" feature--it also stops me from getting all those random people asking me for free art, because they see I've done gift art for someone! XD

Weasyl's a really, super-nice site and I'd love for it to get all the attention it should have. I think sometimes people forget that they had to build their fanbase up at one point--just because you don't immediately have 500 followers here the moment you open an account doesn't mean you suck or anything. You need to post AND INTERACT WITH YOUR FOLLOWERS to get attention. Frankly artists who spam post and vanish need to accept they probably don't have followers because they don't interact--even a giant "thank you journal" is at least some kind of interaction if you don't have time to thank people individually! If you abandon it because "it's too quiet"........it's really because everyone is doing EXACTLY what you're doing. They're not putting the effort in to be here.........and when everybody doesn't put the effort to be here, then it's "quiet". But it's so much more worse when--OH, GOD FA IS DOWN, WHAT DO I DO NOW? I NEED TO POST SOMEWHERE. They mass upload a billion things, FA comes back up in two days and they're gone again. :< It's like Weasyl's become the site people come "back" to ONLY when FA is broken. sigh

Yeah--I also think the definition for mature needs to have those breakout things........gore and nipples (oh, GOD, don't get me started on this because I hate how utterly and amazingly sexist this category is--male nipples are JUST AS SEXUAL as female ones............!) and all those things should be defined differently. In essence if you can't see a pic because it's got a generic blank thumbnail (if they can't see NSFW that is) and a colored border rating--everyone assumes it's sexual............and sometimes it just really isn't. :/

                • Link

Ah, didn't think about that. It is anoiying getting people asking for free art. I get it when I open for commissions the most often. It's honestly the most agrivating thing ever. "Commissions open 5 minutes ago" Can I get a request? I hate the "wind up" some of those people do usually beginning with a note that only say "hi". then winds up "i have a question" and then you start getting cranky because why couldn't they ask the question right after that, and then "Can you draw me art" and then respond with commission prices and they go "No not a commission" Ah yes, thank you for time wasting like this.

That's something I have trouble getting through people's heads, too. I tell people they gotta be active to get activity in return and I always get "Why shOulD I HavE to Be AcTivE? ThAt'S noT My JoB tO bE AcTiVE." and just.... omigosh it's one of the top 5 times I wish I could slap people through the internet and call them a dunce. Don't spam art all at once, you can reach more eyes posting it over time, and also help the other artists not get pushed out of view. Comment on other people's art so that it encourages them to keep posting and possibly get a watch from other people who see your comment. Comment on your own art responses so your watchers know you are there. Occassional conversation journals to give people an open place to feel like a conversation can happen to feel welcomed. "Communities don't grow if you aren't being part of the community." I wish FA wasn't seen as a Back up or a dump site.

Nipples are an enigma of a rating atrocity. It should be fair that all nipples must be under mature content. I actually had an issue on an artsite where Someone got mad at me for telling them to put a mature tag on their art since they had something... uh Expansion Boobs basically. I apparently "Mistook" it" and it was *okay because it was a male character that had nipples. The only thing you can see where the boobs and nipples attached to a small body cartoon lizard. To this day it still infuriates me that it got a pass due to having the "male" tag on it while the content was indistinguishable between male or female anyways. Whether it's labeled male in an obscure place doesn't matter to the peering over the shoulder eyeball about to whisper behind your back why you are looking at porn. The content was fetishy as heck but still "sfw".

ON the other hand, it does make me sad to see artistic nude pieces get locked behind the 18+ filters. The Middle area would have been fine for a large amount of artwork I've seen where it was like THIS. Its just a boob. A filter is fine so that it can be hidden in public, but an 18+ lock is a bit extreme in my opinion. If it were a male, it would have been general for like 95% artists.

                  • Link

That happened to me more times than I could count, especially on FA--people seemed greedy for "free art". When I draw for friends, it means I'm in the mood for it--I generally can't draw for others on a sheer whim, because I usually don't feel my best work goes into it, to tell the truth. XD But, yes--definitely placing your notes on "friends only" cuts down on that here on this particular site!

I remember one friend from FA came over here and thought they'd be more active on Weasyl to stay in contact with me, but after three days they're like "nobody's looking at my stuff" or "nobody says anything" or "nobody faves my stuff" (apparently I was "nobody") or even the dreaded "nobody will commission me"--they gave themselves activity on this site for 3 days before saying "it'd never work out, sorry" and left. You know, I guess once you establish your "base" of 500+ watchers somewhere in particular, you're good and stuff..........but I'm sure it took everyone plenty of time to get to that--all 500+ watchers may not follow you to another site and if you got 500+ watchers within a week on a new place, then you are AMAZING. laughs But I remember going to FurCon one year and attending a panel about "learning to do sales as an artist" and one of the things that was stressed many times in the panel "make the effort to be active on your site/page/etc."--people won't commission artists if they're quiet or absent or only spam-post once a month. They even recommended uploading at least ONE drawing per week, to show your activity on the site and said to thank people when you could.

I don't draw as much as I used to--which is why I like to post news or discussion journals (like my last few Pokemon ones). It gives me a chance to talk with people and get them to talk with me when I don't have art to share. :) And I think people like to know you pay attention to them, too........it strengthens the community as a whole so that we're not just groups of "commission artists", "those who commission" and "those who wish they could do either". We're all people who share common likes or even like to discuss (rationally, please) why we don't like things. Gore and fetishes are not my thing, but it doesn't stop me from appreciating an artist's style, skill or talents. :)

It should definitely be "all nipples fall under the same [mature] category"--I had someone argue with me when I mentioned yaoi manga first and before I even finished my statement they're like "well, that's all fake anyways". Uh, no, not really--it's merely a technical point. "Yaoi" is same-sex pairings written with a women's slant (geared more for romance and female readers than the hardcore stuff, but yaoi creators like Ayano Yamane draws really rather hardcore for mere yaoi, too). What they didn't let me finish was all the gay men's fiction books I've read (I like to read a wide variety of genres, honestly)...............and trust me, real-life gay men consider nipples just as sexual/erotic as women's nipples are. It is not just a "yaoi manga" thing! XD

And that's another thing--pinups and artistic nude content gets thrown immediately between 18+ and the assumption when that happens is ALWAYS "sexual". So........people learning to draw by drawing live models, something that's been done since the dawn of art!!!, is immediately assumed "sexual" because...............nipples or naughty bits are shown. There really needs to be some kind of middle ground for all these things that really are not sexual in nature, but get labelled as such.

Maybe one day people can appreciate and label art properly--but probably not in mine and your lifetime! XD

Hipster voice We had a tag filter before it was cool. 🤓

    • Link

XD You guys have one of the most extensive filters there is now, too. I appreciate it. Its saved my eyeballs a couple times.

      • Link

        Glad to hear it. lol

I will do the opposite and filter everything that isn't gore
