I enjoy using swirls too much

FamiliarAlien

Something different both in drawing style and purpose.

One thing I wanted to do is show that all my alien species have multiple cultural assets and aren't just a planet of hats. I picked the ginaga... because they're kinda my go to species (no secret there)but also because being a kinda super tech savvy species make the visible contrast much easier to produce.

Ginaga are still the simple tree dwelling people they've always been just many choose to live in the city for safety reasons given recent events on their home planet.

For the style... just wanted something soft and cute darn it. Blame artists like Skymachine and Donitkitt. I usually attract more to angular styles or more grotesque ones (explains the look of my own work) but sometimes I want to just make things squishy with minimal details and have roundish curves!

Did some experimentation with the colours and even how I did the background. Figured if I was going to do something a little less directly developing out my sci fi I could still use it to figure out how to keep characters from blending into background details.

Enjoy!

But I likes the angular style! Interesting experiment though.

Yeah, Planet of Hats is something that annoys me to no end . Got like 20 sci-fi story ideas simply out of disgust of what Star Trek became. Don't get me started...

:D thank you. Yeah don't worry I plan to keep using the angular style, I just like experimenting from time to time.

Also glad I'm not alone on that D: I do plan to try to make some jokes about it in my sci fi without being too malicious. Just I get simplifying things to some extent because real cultures can get very complex but to the point they have just one stand out trait its just... come on! You ever run into the problem of designated villain species which has some pretty unfortunate implication to say the least x-x

Hmmm... it's difficult to think of any true designated villain species in the sci-fi I like. Star Trek, Bab5, and Stargate had the decency to turn their designated villains on their heads once in a while. Actually they made major plot points out of it. Star Wars on the other hand...

:o yeah most examples I can think of are ya know more things aimed at kids and/or video games. Honestly both of those have that problem outside of sci fi too. For example most people are impressed the Lion King cartoon actually addressed that not all hyenas are evil, it only took them... what 20 years for them to make something that didn't vilify an entire species of animals that actually exist lol.

That's not something I heard of, but the thing about the original Lion King was it's (very loosely) based on African legends, and in the folklore there Hyenas are evil abominations and allies of witches.

I very much enjoy the tiny spear it's holding, looks like a fun creature! Nice colors too!

thank you :3. Fun fact: ginaga don't use spears for hunting since they're primarily herbivores. They use them to scare off anything that may be trying to eat them.
