On Monday we beat a romhack of Pokemon: Crystal called Pokemon: Crystal Clear. The intent of the hack is to remove all the barriers across the Jhoto region and add in the entire Kanto region too. From the start you pick your starting town (Newbark or Pallet), choose your starter from a list of 20 Pokemon, and then you go to do whatever. You can go to ANY gym right away and their difficulty is based on how many gyms you've beaten so far. Only thing stopping you is the wild Pokemon in the area, those are as hard as before. Otherwise you never need strength, waterfall, surf, fly, or cut. Its completely open.

This was EXACTLY what I wanted in a Pokemon game. I loved loved LOVED getting to explore both regions and getting to experience the gyms in any order. I got a team with Pokemon that I usually never use, and they each became their own little personality. If the aesthetics of the old school Pokemon games doesn't turn you off then I really suggest you go and download the rom to give it a try~
