I don't often cover videogame music, as I prefer composing, but I just beat Radical Drea-- err.. Chrono Cross (the greatest Chrono Trigger fanfic, like ever! ) again, and felt this was necessary. There will be -one- more of these.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game! Probably one of my favorite RPGs! It's just... so... bizarre in the storyline area (not as bad as Xenogears, but still completely bonzo towards the end, especially.) I kind of wish they hadn't tied it into Chrono Trigger at all, actually, because I think it could have been fantastic on its own.
Actually yeah, it would be good on its own. :o Even then it could perhaps be tidied up or have pacing altered a little, since it does kinda jump about wildly to my recollection. ... I dunno, hurf. I loved it when I first played it and thought it seemed pretty much perfect, but looking back on it now can notice shortcomings...
Yeah, I honestly felt exactly the same way as you. The pacing is so bizarre. Like... A lot of the time (especially dependent on which paths you chose) there would be points where I imagined Serge just throwing his hands up and going "Screw this, I have no idea what my investment in this is, I'm going to go back home and go to sleep even if I am a friggin' furry now!" only to be suddenly told something like "Oh, hey, we're going to Hermit's Hideaway... because! JUST DO IT!" I think a lot of that can be blamed on the development cycle. I think if they'd had another year, we'd have all the characters they cut out added back in, and maybe the ties to Chrono Trigger wouldn't have been so flimsy.
I think it's still a solid game despite those shortcomings. The battle system is one of my favorites in any turnbased game, for instance, and the graphics and music are unmatched, but yeah... there's quite a few shortcomings. :(

Ahaha, 'Chrono Trigger fanfic'. That's a good description of CC. (Although I'm personally a big fan of it, it does have issues...) This is also a good song.
