Counting with purple foxes by Woofle

Counting with purple foxes

Woofle

A really rudimentary teaching tool I worked on for a close friend, to help her get a handle on time signatures the same way I did -- by listening. With no formal training, it took me years to even figure out what the hell a time signature was let alone compose in multiples.

Using Verse's theme I illustrated the differences between 3 different time signatures. I kind of got silly with the chords and a few of the tracks, but hopefully the point still gets across.

Count the song on the tambourine! The whole song is a 72 BPM

0'00-1'20

  • 3/4 Time signature *

1'20-3'06

  • 4/4 Time signature *

3'10-end

  • 6/4* Time signature *

*Is this 6/4? Can someone with formal training can correct me here?

I find this song rather "nice 'n' easy going".

    Good job as usual

Awww, thanks! :D I totally balad-ized it here. XD

Haha, yeah I remember doing that.

DDR aided me in learning, surprisingly. Though, I also have a parent who's heavily invested in jazz So i was forced to learn it a lot faster or be unable to even enjoy it smoothly. Take Five was played at 5/8, and many of the songs I enjoy tend to be 7/8 and 9/8 ~<3

Jazz music'll do it, won't it? That's one genre that I adore but cannot wrap my brain around. It's probably the most complicated music on the planet. @~@ I think I need to listen to a lot more so I can get a hang of 5/8 , 7/8 and 9/8! Those sound like they're awesome! :D

I get very strong Phantasmagoria of Flower View vibes from the first & third section. I find it interesting that there's no 5/8, 5/4 or 7/8 sections.

I spent about 18 hours trying to properly play 5/4 ... or, well, anything in a 5 count. That's something that I'm a -long- way from mastering, but would like to learn in the future. Same for 7 count. I only just learned to play in 3 and 6 in the past few years... before that, I didn't even know time signatures existed. XD Hopefully in the future I'll be able to do those, too!

If you want some fun, you really should try 11/16 or 13/16 time sigs. :D

I think my brain just committed suicide for knowing that those exist. XD Someday, I will attempt those, when I'm good enough. @~@

    This is cool stuff.

As for time signatures, I am not quite sure what the numbers mean. The first one I do, but second one not really... and nobody has managed to explain it to me haha. All my stuff is 4/something haha

It took me years and years and years to realize what the heck these were. x.x; I'd been playing them all along with zero knowledge. x.x; I thought everything was the same!

The second number has to do with when the chords start over, also! Which technically means the part I said was 6/4 is 12/8 ... oops...

      • Link

By that logic my stuff is something like 4/16 or 4/8... but the 4 is certain hahaha

I thiiiiiink you might be right, especially if your chords seem to last for a while.
