Appearance
KaoKaos are a small bipedal rodent like species. They come in two separate sub-species: Normal and Alpha. They have no apparent sexual dimorphism, making them a highly androgynous creature. They have mouse like tails that can have a vast length range. Their ears always have two splits, separating the ear into three "prongs" that always go along the top or bottom in order of size. Kaos always have three digits on their hands and feet, two fingers and a thumb and 3 toes. They're covered in a very fine fur that gets thicker on certain areas of the body. They are known to both sport a "mane" that connects from their chest fluff or a patch of hair that grows longer from the tops of their heads. This bit can be grown out and styled if the kao feels so inclined. The fur on their forearms always looks like fluffy gloves as the fur gets thicker towards the elbow. If their tail displays fur, it has a unique way of 'fanning' from the sides, rather than covering the entire thing. It is possible for it to cover all of it, or form in a completely different pattern, however this isn't as common.

KaoKaos can look vastly different from one another, but all Kaos share a few common features: Pitch black rings around their eyes, "fluff bib", chest jewels, and their blood is always a shade of pink! That aside, they can have a variety of different basic traits. The most common thing between both types of Kaos are their ears. Kaos can have very long ears or very short ears. Longer ears are the most common and maximum length can be about 2/3 of their height. Shorter ears are usually much less common unless artificially done through cropping or damage. Their ears come in 3 styles: stiff, droop, and lop. The ears are quite flexible and can rotate at the base. Lop ears can be rotated around still but are mostly left to freely flop wherever against the body. Also, KaoKao eyes are very large and can have pretty much any shape of pupil, within reason, from normal circles to starbursts and swirls. Their irises are large, making their sclera nearly invisible.

🚧 A development more recently, as Kaos have observed humans visiting their land, is the acquisition of a humanoid form. The form is incomplete and resembles a faun or satyr, their lower half always like their natural form. Other traits from their natural form carry over, sometimes even the full body coloration and fur. In humanoid form, kaos still have their three digit rule despite their hands looking much more human. Not all kaos are able to utilize this form, but younger generations are obtaining the ability to do so more consistently.

✬ KK02: Normal Kaos
Normal Kaos also have a couple traits specific to them. Saberteeth are one of two rather distinct features some may sport. Their noses may look a tad more angular from the side if a Kao has these. They also can have rounded or clawed digits. The "claws" don't actually look like normal claws, just sharper looking ends to their digits. Likewise, they are not as lethal as normal claws but are good for defense none the less among other things. Normal Kaos only have a single jewel on their chest.

✬ KK03: Alpha Kaos
Alpha Kaos have some different shared traits compared to their smaller counterparts. Aside from being a much taller, sometimes more unkempt looking, and more muscular variety, Alphas have visible, non-retractable claws on all digits including a velociraptor-like sickle claw on their inner toe, as well as at least two fangs protruding from their upper jaw. The bridge of their snout has a bump and their nostrils are a bit larger and more rounded. They also are the only variety of Kao to sport two chest jewels.

✬ KK04: Coloration and Markings
Commonly Kao markings and colors are themed around places or things occurring in nature (seashore, forest, rainbows, space stuff, etc) but by no means are they confined to this rule. KaoKaos of both varieties can sport any sort of markings or colors for the most part, however they are usually not insanely bright and eye searing. (If you want, they can be though.)
Some rules do apply:
-All flesh colors including the inner ears, mouth, and pawpads normally share the same color, however, they can be mismatched occasionally.
-Eyes and jewels are the same color and are normally on the lighter or more saturated end of the spectrum. The only reason a Kaos jewel or eyes will be dulled is due to illness or automatonism as explained below.

✬ KK05: All About Jewels
Normal Kaos have a single oval or circular jewel in the center of their chest among their fluff. Alpha's sport two diamond shape jewels that look much like spikes sticking out of the chest from the side. These jewels show the state of the Kaos health. Kaos in good health will have shiny and brilliant looking jewels as if freshly polished. The jewel will dull if a Kao is sick and as a Kao approaches death, their jewel will turn black and gain a matte texture.

🚧 Something to note about jewel coloration: Jewels can be repainted if desired, however, among usual kao society this is not a common thing except for special occasions or in the idea of honoring a loved one. Painting of the jewel any dark colors outside of these reasons will usually result in shunning much like automatons. When a kao willingly colors their jewel darker/black with no significant reason, it becomes an insult to the ill and the dead. The only time "decorative recoloring" with dark colors is deemed "okay" is usually among humans as a way to personalize a domesticated kao. Similarly, "trimming" and artificially shaping kao jewels is something that may happen to domesticated individuals as well. This is seen as an act of cruelty to those who are familiar with the importance of the jewels, though.

🚧 KaoKao jewels can be scratched or chipped from regular impacts with little effect on the individual itself. These small blemishes have a chance to regenerate. With enough force however, the jewels can crack or break and even completely shatter. This damage will not be able to fully repair. Being connected to their internal systems to indicate health, this damage can cause the Kao a lot of pain as well. This may also leave the kao with some degree of mental or emotional trauma. If the damage is bad enough, it can be a gateway for problems to make their way in and make the Kao ill if not properly protected. This can lead to automatonism if the individual contracts certain illnesses or the trauma itself is enough to leave them in such a state.

✬ KK06: 🌟 Automatonism
In extremely rare cases, a Kao may be born without a jewel or their jewel is black. This condition is refered to as automatonism. These Kaos are in a robotic/zombified state of mind and rarely are able to develope any ability to function beyond standard skills to survive. These unfortunate individuals are usually left on their own and normally do not last long as they basically are just living machines. A lot of these Kaos also display complete melanism of their eyes (iris and sclera are completely black.)
In the off chance a Kao with automatonism is accepted among others, they usually are able to develop some small bit of personality and other skills, but will always be stuck in their mostly robotic way of life. These kaos make good workers if able to be taught and directed correctly, but poor companions to most. They may seem slower than the average KaoKao and are not nearly as active as well.
Automatonism can happen if a kao is afflicted with certain illness or extreme trauma.

✬ KK07: Other Traits
Previously thought to be rare mutations, these traits are becoming all too common and from now on are viewed as extra additions to common Kaos. Being a highly adaptable species, KaoKaos are prone to a number of strange adaptive traits from viewing other species. The more Kaos look to different species and requirements to adapt, the stranger these traits can become. Kaos who live in higher elevations, prefer airborne prey, or look up to flying creatures may gain a wing like adaptation in subsequent generations. Likewise, Kaos that live near a body of water and observe aquatic life, may develop traits to assist in easier aquatic living and hunting.
*Up to 4 of these extra traits can be added during standard creation.

✬ KK08: 🌟 Phantasmal Kaos
Kaokaos live among another unusual group of beings. These little creatures from afar look like fireflies, always being illuminated by their own glow. Kaos refer to them as phasms. Phasms often are seen in small swarms and have strong supernatural properties. If an individual approaches, the phasms will gather around them and after some time will choose to either leave them be or actually meld with the individual. When they meld with another being, they give that being supernatural properties and/or mythical forms as well. This is referred to as a phantasmal trait. Phantasmals are chosen with no rhyme or reason, so the individual may not get something as pleasant as others.

Current examples include:
"Cerberus" form
Non-corporeal form
Fire breathing
Ice manipulation
Energy creation
Rapid decay induction
Healing/Regeneration
Acidic saliva

✬ KK09: Communication, Behavior, and Society
Kaos naturally communicate through squeaks and chirps, but they are actually capable of picking up human speech. It's more common for simplified and broken language, using gestures and other ways to communicate anything they can't put into words. Their ability to pick up reading and writing is similar. On the other hand, with proper exposure and study, it's highly possible to become very fluent and more advanced in all of these things. Some can even be multi-lingual with enough effort.

Examples of natural vocalizations: [1] [2] (gekkering) [3] [4]

Kao society varies between the two types quite a bit. Due to their small stature and less threatening appearance, normal Kaos tend to live in large groups with one another and are quite populous. Alpha Kaos are more solitary and independent, having evolved to be much stronger and able to take care off themselves. They're usually found in smaller groups of about 1-5 individuals. Occasionally, one or a couple Alphas may live among a pack of normal Kaos. Alternatively, Alphas may also adopt normals into their group and are not counted against their 1-5 limit.

KaoKaos are typically docile in nature and tend to be non-combative unless necessary. Normal Kao clans tend to get along with one another just fine with little to no conflict. In fact, a lot will end up merging just due to how well they get along and provide for each other. Normal Kaos are known for their "strength in numbers" way of living.
Alpha Kaos while still fairly tame, don't often get along well with fellow Alphas outside their group. Alphas are known for starting turf wars if they find other Alphas within their territory. This mostly happens with groups that have reached their limit. Smaller groups may still be suspicious of one another but they're not as vicious. Lone rogue Kaos can usually pass through these areas fairly unscathed.

Another rarely observed occurrence is a clan of outcasts. These clans can be small or large and consist of both Normals and Alphas, usually with some of the more strange traits, those afflicted with automatonism, and rogues who have defected and feel they've no place among others like themselves.

Diet
KaoKaos are omnivorous, enjoying both vegetation and meats. Normal Kaos have developed a habit among their groups where sabertooth Kaos will use their oversized teeth to crack open hard shelled food such as nuts. This is both for the benefit of themselves and others of their clan.

✬ KK10: Reproduction
Kaos reproduce like other mammals, resulting in live births. Mixing between the sub-species is pretty simple. Two Normals will always create another Normal. Two alphas will always create another Alpha. A Normal and an Alpha, regardless of lineage or which is which sex, will always have an equal chance of producing either an Alpha or a Normal. This also means that any simultaneous multiple offspring has a chance to be any combination of the sub-species! Twins could result in one Normal and one Alpha; triplets could see two Normals and one Alpha or two Alphas and one Normal! Mutations can optionally be inherited by the offspring. Phantasmal traits can carry over to offspring, however they usually are a variant of their parents' Phantasmal and not just directly inherited.
*By no means does this mean you can breed freely. You will need to obtain the proper MYO or custom slots for the offspring if it has any special traits or is an Alpha.
Oh, and since the introduction of humanoid forms, I know some of you are thinking this, so no, Kaos cannot cross breed.
