Fear Tactics by Sparkyopteryx

Fear Tactics

Sparkyopteryx

Doing more of mine and the fiance's GW2 characters always helps in keeping me from going insane, this time the “friends forever” duo Phlebotomist Zepp (mine) and Caita Deftsledge. My first time drawing a Charr! I do apologize for more fanart but it seems like one of those cathartic subjects that does great in keeping me in a good mood. I'll be going back to trades and commissions this week.

Even when I'm doing something incredibly self-indulgent I always make efforts to make it a learning experience in some way. In this case I wanted to see if I could try a somewhat rougher inking style with quicker, less involved coloring and somehow be able to pull it all off and make a decent-looking, effective picture. I used more Prismacolor markers in this one than Copics, so some of the blending is not nearly as good but I'm pleased with it. I could be happier but that's probably just the perfectionist side of me talking.

I think it's awesome how this picture turned from something simple and fun into what it is now. I think the colors here look great. It's the exact opposite of Zepp's Super Spicy Surprise cooking.

He thinks you really need to stop mentioning that bit of indignity.

Id be interested to know how big is the drawing :)

This particular one was done in my sketchbook, which is 8.5''x11''. There's also a bit of white margin around the whole thing but I cropped that out in the scan.

        Wow, that is pretty big!

Is it? On average most everything I work with is between those dimensions and 9''x12'' so it's pretty standard for me. Out of curiosity, when you work in traditional what size do you typically work in?

Mostly smaller stuff like aceo cards or A6 sized paper. Biggest I work with is A4.

Personally, I think the rough edges characteristic of Prismacolors really lend to the overall feeling of this piece! It has more of that stylized comic book feel that really portrays an adventerous pair well, you know? Fantastic as always.

Yeah, it really doesn't detract from it too much and since it was the aesthetic I was going for, I let it slide. I'm just a blending purist haha!

I really love motifs that illustrate adventuring parties from various fantasy settings since it poses a unique set of challenges: how to make it dynamic without making it cluttered, making sure all of the characters are equally represented visually, among other things. Also I'm going to say right now extreme height differences in characters like this are the hardest trick of all to pull off. Thank you!
