The Wall pt. 1 - In the Flesh? by Seagoon

The Wall pt. 1 - In the Flesh?

Seagoon

So here's the beginning of the Wall Project, drawn two years ago by Jesslyra (original here).

This first song is basically an introduction number, though as with so many things in The Wall more can be read into it than that, as let's face it; there are a number of confusing things about the first number, right down to the question mark in the title. What can be ascertained is that it alludes to both the birth of our protagonist and anti-hero Pink (both literally and in terms of narrative), and the death of his father, who is shot down by German forces during World War 2 (hence the Spitfire on fire in the background).

One other interpretation I quite like is the idea that the song actually takes place after the Wall has come down (yeah, spoiler alert for those who haven't heard the album, but really; how can you spoil an album that's over thirty years old as I type this?), and the rest of the album is kind of an extended flashback, with Pink in the role of a modern Ancient Mariner. Constantly torn between his hard-won wisdom and the ghosts that haunt his dreams, he feels compelled to tell his story to anyone who'll listen, the story taking the form of a music concert/album. For a bit of nostalgia I decided to have the opening number performed by the first group of characters I created when I joined the fandom years ago.

So bring the lights up, roll the sound effects, and let Alborke and the gang (I never did decide on a band name for them) be your musical narrators, as they guide you through this twisted tale.

Here's a link to the song itself (as performed by The Scorpions in Berlin in 1990; it's the only version of the song I could find on YouTube): check it out here

The Wall remains the property of Roger Waters and Pink Floyd.
