Commission for Aerys

This one was a challenge, six limbed and hybrid bat species... The design phase took way to long. But when I sat down to but charcoal to paper it went fairly smooth. It hasn't been to long sense I last did a Charcoal, but I miss doing them. Pastels are like charcoal, but NOT. I was worried at first that I had forgotten how to approach charcoal at all. Lots of psychic warfare with this one... Anyways, done with 6B, 4B, HB General's Charcoal pencils, and 6B General's Thick Charcoal Stick (That sounds dirty). Paper-mate Eraser Stick, and a Kneaded Eraser, on 11” x 14” Canson Bristol Paper.

I remember this was one of the first pieces I saw that caught my eye back when I first discovered you on FA a long while back. I'm definitely biased in saying that it might have been due to the fact that I love greyscale work and it also happened to be a masterfully rendered bat (you don't see enough of them in my opinion!).

I haven't tackled charcoal in years and frankly at this point I'm leery to now, but damn if it isn't your work that inspires me to get back into them!

I to was leery, after terrible experiences with it in school, but I gave it a try, ad BOOM! It clicked. I still love working in charcoal, but everyone wants my paintings now. [Grin]

I really don't blame them any! Your work in color and paint is brilliant. I will always have a soft spot for greyscale though and if I ever have the chance to commission you it'll probably be along those lines, haha.
