The Encounter exhibit

Red Dragonette

This was at the pirate section of Gumbalimba Park's museum. I didn't get all of the exhibits, so you'll have to see the rest yourself at the Gumbalimba Park in Roatán, Honduras. Anyway, this was said in the textbox:

"Christopher Columbus made four voyages to explore these territories in the name of the Spanish Crown. However, it was not until his final voyage (1502) that he made landfall in Honduras, first at GUANAJA and later at PUNTA CAXINAS on the mainland, now known as Punta Castilla.

Before landing at Punta Caxinas, Columbus' small fleet engaged in what may be one of the most dramatic encounters recorded in the history of early contact between European and American people. Near Guanaja, Columbus met a fleet of huge native canoes loaded with trade goods probably destined for the Bay Islands. He captured one trading canoe which carried around 25 men, women, and children, balls of cotton doth, food stuffs (maize, cacao, beans, tubers), copper goods, and flint-edged wooden swords. This event probably makes the first encounter between Europeans and complex societies of the Americas."
