Modeling an Anthro Raptor in Sculptris (video) (critique requested)

Phyla

Just my modelling workflow in Sculptris. Since doing this, I have developed a better understanding of the musculature of the torso.

Very nice indeed... what's the music btw? I recognize the lines from Dune.

Thanks! Yeah, at first I was like "The spice?" and then I heard more lines and was like "Oh the spice!!!" lol Geek points, yay. I guess it's called "Ambient Galaxy (Disco Valley Mix)." You'd expect something in the title that has more to do with what the song is about, wouldn't you? :)

This is absolutely stunning! You make it look so simple! I loved watching this evolve so much through the process. Definitely urging me to pick up Z Brush and give it another go, but gawd, it looks so... confusing, haha. I think what was even more impressive when I watched this, was watching how you selected so many different types of reference, actually looking up the birds as well as skeletal structure and then the overall raptor shape. I loved that!

I think the only thing I would have loved to see a little bit more on this would be the little bump/spine on the back of a raptors head, neck and back. Other than that, this is just gorgeous, and it doesn't take away the impact of how awing this is. Absolutely stunning! Great work. :)

Thank you very much, I am glad you enjoyed the vid! I was definitely awkward to begin with, and I'm still learning, but this was the time that I started to feel like I didn't have to think so hard to work with the program. Would you believe this is actually Sculptris? It was bought by Pixologic, who also make ZBrush, but it's totally free, and insanely powerful. I've been a little in shock that something like this is free, but I'm still buying Zbrush so I can get more done in less time, for posing and making renders of things that I don't need to export to Blender and go through the process of rigging and re-toping.

Thanks for your feedback/thoughts/observations, it's always good to see one's work through the eyes of others. :) I am planning to add a lot more detail to this guy still. I'll have to do a ZBrush turnaround with better lighting showing the changes when I finish.

You are very much welcome. I can only dream one day to be as good as you at this kind of stuff! Definitely an inspiration. I think any more vids or tutorials will help others understand how you work. You just look so comfortable working with muscles, it's insane. I honestly couldn't tell the difference between any kind of 3D modelling programme, haha. I only knew of Zbrush as a friend gave it to me, and I opened it, and was like da fuq is this!? Tried, failed, gave up. But like anything, just keep practicing and one day you'll get there. :)

Hmm, it wouldn't be much at all to do a few videos actually explaining what I'm doing and showing the tools I'm selecting. You are very fortunate to have a friend who lets you use their ZBrush, because it costs $600 and more than twice that not long ago... x_x. That's a great attitude to have and yeah, it's like when I was learning Blender. It took me 9 months just to navigate and not get stuck after three clicks... or just one. Take a breather, watch tuts, and you'll one day find yourself making progress and knowing what you are doing! lol. ZBrush is huge, and thankfully, Sculptris is just a handful of sculpt tools, made able to be inverted so you can diversify your affects, and beyond that, it's just you and the clay, like really sculpting with a ball of... something. If ZBrush was a bit much, Sculptris is a fantastic stepping stone just to get the basics. :D

oijsdiofj oh wow that is expensive! DXX Yes, I feel super lucky now, and even worse that I don't really use it that much! I need to actually use it now! That would be amazing, though. Sounds like me and Photoshop, haha. Was so bad when I started, but I'm very happy to see my progress over the course of a few years. I don't think anyone should EVER stop improving. There's always things to improve on and look at and finding different techniques can help so much. I might have to look into Scultpris, because man... opening Zbrush, I just look at it and I feel I'm looking at something WAY beyond my mind's reaching, haha!

Don't feel bad! I think that spacing out the hard work is part of learning. With sessions here and there, even months apart, eventually you'll be drawn to the software more often as you grow more comfortable. Getting going is the toughest part! :D At least, in my experience so far. I do expect that trying some advanced stuff is going to induce some headaches, lol. Right now I'm neck deep in learning about UV maps texture baking etc. ...Based on your art I'd say you have a lot of potential in ZBrush. Please feel free to let me know how it goes. :) And I do think you'll find Sculptris far friendlier, lol. When I first opened Maya, I had that same reaction lol. Like someone shoved me into a space shuttle.

Haha! I will definitely give it a go. =3 Do you use a tablet or a mouse to work with in these? Or does it not really matter when it comes to 3D modelling?

                • Link

You know a mouse works great for me. I sometimes break out my tablet with Sculptris if I need to do something that requires a lot of hand-control like detailed scales, but otherwise just keep your fingers on shift, and ctrl and middle mouse button and left mouse button, and you've got all the controls at your fingertips literally. :)

Anytime, man; truly an inspiration towards making anything out of the simplest of structures, my friend. Never stop improving, R. -CR-
