I've found it interesting that Pichu didn't happen until Gen II, I just assumed he was another 3-step evolution from the get-go, as is common now, but nope. I'm guessing the original artists be like "Well, Pikachu's a big hit, but what would be even more kawaii? Baby Pikachu!"
