Rhill explores one of the abandoned mining facilities, looking for useful things like food, tools, ammunition and so on. When the offworlders left, they didn't bother to pack up most of their supplies, and in their absence the mining facilities deteriorated quite quickly as a result of the desert's harsh sandstorms, temperature extremes and torrential rains.

The light he carries is an electric torch, the sort commonly used by the offworlders in the mines.
