I had the pleasure of encountering this lovely monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) at rest on a bush while hiking with my brother at Saguaro National Park in Tucson, Arizona.

It was just my point-and-shoot digital camera set to "macro" mode. It did make for an interesting depth-of-field effect, didn't it?

Yeah, the OOF area ha a pointillist look to it. Not sure I like it, but it is interesting and works with this shot.

It seems like it's at least partially an effect of the mesquite bark, shrubs, and dappled sunlight in the background.
