This little fatty is the first wild Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) that I've ever seen out in the desert proper (as opposed to lounging on my driveway, for example), in over two decades of time spent in Arizona. It was enjoying a leisurely walk alongside the "Squeeze Pen Trail" in Saguaro National Park, and stopped for a rest in the dappled shade beneath a mesquite tree. If not for the fact that it was on the move at the time, my brother and I likely wouldn't have spotted it on account of its terrific camouflage.
