Poplar Spirals by Komitadjie

Poplar Spirals

Komitadjie

My new tool arrived! The Robert Sorby mini spiraling tool. So far, I'm pretty darn impressed. It doesn't work all that well on poplar, I've had splintering and poor-finish problems with it with almost every tool I've used, and this wasn't much of an exception, but it sure shows off the potential of the tool! I think I'm starting to get the hang of the smaller wire, too, I didn't break it at all doing the burns on this one.

That one looks incredibly pretty, I like the sharp contrast of the burns to the really light wood, not that I would not like the cherry and walnut tops, I love both woods so far, but this looks especially pleasing to my eye.

Look, a three-headed monkey! steal all the tops so far

I think I'm going to have to acquire some maple for just that reason, the light coloured wood with the dark burns looks sharp and crisp. I think some of the cherry ones with burns will be done too, cherry burns nicely, but I've not done a top with burned details!

Hey, I could swear I had some tops here a minute ago... xD

Well, then after your morning wood project yesterday we should soon find out what they look like! You're going to share those, aren't you?

No, no, you had not hide all the tops under my fluffy tail and look cute and innocent o.o

xD They're almost all rough-turned now, just half a dozen left to go. Once that's all done, I will be able to start actually making some tops out of 'em! I also have another couple parts on the way for the lathe, and another detailing tool that should let me put some interesting details on the disk tops and bottoms. :) I'll be posting them up as they come to completion, for sure! I'm actually going to be making some for "Relay for Life" here locally, to support the team at work. :)

... Huh, could SWEAR I had a whole bowl full of tops here just a second ago... Scratches his head

I like that spiral design. Poplar must be a huge pain in the butt though but the colors make it look lovely. I like the contrast between the burns and the light wood color.

It's a BIT annoying, mostly because (you can see here, actually) how it tends to splinter away from corners and crisp edges. I had to sand the bajezus out of this one to get it to smooth up. And I picked the best angle to show the least lost points. I'm thinking that some maple needs to be acquired, and repeat this experiment with the tighter-grained wood. I'll bet it holds the details better.
