Poplar Tops by Komitadjie

Poplar Tops

Komitadjie

Trying the same wire-burning method with poplar. I've had mixed results with it before, and about the same again this time. I was kind of distracted when working on the larger one here, and totally forgot to sand the central part of the spindle! Argh! Beautiful, glossy finish everywhere else... splintery and unsanded entirely in the middle. Bah!

Also, it seems to burn pretty well with the larger wire and 2k+ RPM, but it EATS the smaller wire. I broke the small burning wire three times getting those four burns into the smaller top. Just takes too much pressure to get the poplar to char nicely, I think. Overall I'm not as fond of poplar as I am of walnut, it just doesn't look as classy. Also, it tends to have major density changes, so the tops don't tend to spin as nice and wobble-free as the walnut or cherry ones. It IS amazingly cheap and readily available, though.
