zoro (digital) bust

keirajo

I've been reading a ton of ZoSan doujinshi. (I feel like I should draw some, but...no skills and not time!)

Forgive me.

Have some Roronoa Zoro if you want! chuckle

Uhhhh...I used the blood splatter brush...so Moderate because of that, I guess?

Roronoa Zoro belongs to Eiichiro Oda/One Piece.

I'll try to! I wish Sanji wasn't so difficult (am bad at drawing facial hair)...but Luffy is tons of fun to draw! You might see a lot of chibis though. If you don't mind plain old cute chibis! :)

Zoro's just my fave, so I draw him more often than anyone. I just picked up volume 73 of the manga today...can't wait to read it!

        :)

I follow the manga online so I'm always up to date on the story. I do collect the manga too though, I got volume 1-9 and 17(I got 17 in sale, it was like 1/5th a volumes normal price, it was bent(damaged*) a bit and therefore on the sale) I haven't bought a volume for a while but eh, it will all be here at some point, not in much a hurry.(I'm also planning to change all the dumb "Zolo" words into a Zoro cause my lord I still am baffled as to why they changed Zoro's name. I mean Luffy's I get but Zoro's, I do not, no.
I also intend to buy all the dvd's at some point, make up for the fact that I've downloaded most of the episodes online for free. :P

          into Zoro*

I have the original releases of volumes 1-3, before VIZ changed from "Zoro" to "Zolo". In a way...I understand their vague reasoning--they didn't want to run into name copyright issues (with the old-time "Zorro"), since the U.S. is kinda really strict in copyright stuff. So they basically used a general rule when translating Japanese...when reading katakana lettering, "R" and "L" can be used interchangably in translation. Some people take this to mean ALL katakana "R" MUST BE "L"...but it's not always true. I think VIZ often exploits the general American public's not-knowing-Japanese in order to translate things as they like.

Ironically, this can backfire on them in some instances. In volume 73 here, there was an SBS question where a reader pointed out to Oda how many times Zoro refers to Sanji by name and how many times Sanji refers to Zoro by name--and it turns out that Zoro has never called Sanji by name. However, the VIZ editor made a footnote saying that in the "American edition" Zoro has called Sanji by name several times. Again...VIZ takes a lot of leniency to translate things in a very loose manner. "Dragon Ball" is a fabulous example of this (beyond their breaking it up into the separate ages of Goku)--it may not translate well, but the way Trunks-from-the-future refers to characters in the past is very, VERY important. The fact that he calls Gohan "Gohan-san" shows how much he respects the boy who will become his teacher in the future...when in the manga, this term confuses Gohan the first few times Trunks calls him this. VIZ completely negates this and slips in extra made-up dialogue to prevent having to explain this.

Oh yeah. But I remember hearing that Zolo started because 4kids is terrible and because of them people could be really confused is they changed the name back when Viz took over.
But your explanation is much more logical. :P

Even so I'm still gonna change the name in the manga volumes to Zoro(even if I do read it up as Zoro in my head when going through them), if not just to make sure that the people that might read this when visiting, or more importantly, if I ever get a kid(s), they will not have their first experience ruined by a wrong name. ;P

It's a good idea! To be honest I completely gloss over and still see Zoro whenever I read it...even if it says "Zolo" in the book. chuckle

I read a lot of manga that just drives me bonkers because I can tell when the translations are doing all katakana "R" as "L". I only had 1 year of Japanese classes, but...I learned the rules. Katakana represents non-Japanese words (generally English, but other foreign languages too), so if you are a translator and stop to think--you can figure out the foreign word and know whether it's R or L. Oda is clearly referencing Zorro for Zoro...just as a swordsman name. :)

I haven't attended any Japanese classes yet and I notice.

Yeah, Zoro is based on Zorro a bit but not completely.

Bandana: that is all you need to tell the truth to notice it. The names just a extra
