Apollo - Realism by Kannos

Apollo - Realism

Kannos

A realism bust for Mondeis! I got very carried away with this one, so it became much bigger/more detailed than my usual busts. In fact, this piece will now serve as an example of a new realism tier that sits between 'bust' and 'waist up'.

This was my first piece using a new technique where I paint the entire image in greyscale and then apply color via layers afterwards. I really like this method of working since it lets me focus on tone and texture first and then worry about color later. I have included a step by step image showing how the image progressed. After the final B&W image was finished I did the coloring in Photoshop but then transferred the image over to Adobe Lightroom 5 for final color tinting to help bring it all together.

Thanks! The trick to creating that sort of 'lint ball' texture on clothing is to paint the clothing (stripes, shadows/tones/etc) and then create a grey layer over it. I use 100% neutral grey which has a hex code of 7d7d7d in PS. I then add noise to this layer and then use the 'Splatter' filter (usually under Brush Strokes) in the PS filter panel to give it a mottled texture. I then apply either 'Blur' or 'Blur More' to it to soften it. I then set the layer to overlay and tweak the opacity, along with the saturation of the noise, as needed to create that look. :) I then add the final details (stray hairs, etc) in a final top layer over that.

And I just noticed that the shirt has bits of stray fur here and there clinging to it, as it sheds. That's an awesome detail that is easy to miss. Your skill is legendary, I have to say.
