Magnum was short when he was in high school (he hit a growth spurt in later years). because of this, he wasn't the physically strongest. he tired out easily, especially during P.E.. swimming was required in his freshman year, so this was when learned how to swim. it was hard, but he was able to manage.

one Friday he and his class had to swim a lap. he was able to reach the end of the pool, but he was incredibly weary. he tried to swim back, but he grew tired and sank, too exhausted to stay afloat. he struggled to resurface but he hardly had any energy left. luckily, a classmate of his who was more athletic (and taller) went back and helped him to the surface with the rest of his classmates. his school let him go home that day so he could rest over the weekend, but the shock of what happened that day gave him anxieties about diving and swimming underwater. later in his sophomore year he started developing depression, and his struggles followed him into adulthood.
