Seven Pack Pantheon: Repun Kamuy by Farel

Seven Pack Pantheon: Repun Kamuy

Farel

Took a while, but we finally continue with the next deity, one likely less known to the average person: Repun Kamuy, the God of the sea of the Ainu (Indigenous peoples from the area around Northern Japan).

Raphael was this really friendly and overly enthusiastic guy who wanted to do adventures with his friends. I had planned for him to someday discover that he does have a legendary magician as his ancestor, which would make him become arrogant. Of course later he would realize that he did turn his back on his friends, becoming more considerate as a person than he has was.

I knew I needed a God related to water to represent his journey, and as I read through all their stories, Repun Kamuy stood out immensely:
When the people were starving, he killed a whale, and let it drift towards a human village. A sea wren (a bird) came and told the God that the humans were cutting up the whale in a disrespectful way, to which Repun laughed, and proclaimed that they can do with it as they please. Later while traveling yet again, he saw the same village, and found out that the sea wren lied, as the humans were cutting the whale while wearing robes, doing so with sacred swords, and being respectful and grateful for the gift that they received. Rapun Kamuy was so moved by these actions that he decided to thank the humans by letting them feast on the bounty of the sea for all time!

Many sea Gods are furious, angry, and merciless, but this one is so different... He is noted to be carefree, generous, and his whole myth depicts him as someone displaying a lot of gratitude. This is why it felt so fitting to make him be the God that would represent Raphael's progression as a character: appreciating what others have done for him, and being at their side.

In terms of design, Rapun Kamuy was either depicted as, or associated with orcas, so it was a pretty straight-forward choice to pick this as his animal. I went for a cool surfer-dude look, which seemed to go along with a carefree personality.
