Before the drones were given their new smooth facial treatment, they were often put in situations where the hive network wouldn't be able to reach them on far away missions. So it was up to drones to maintain their own training. Pressing to each other, repeating mantras, and reinforcing their connections.  

Nowadays the signals have been expanded with a little quantum tunneling, but the old instinct to touch marks and affirm their obedience has not wanted.
