the first plague hunter was said to have made a pact with a seraphim for the secret knowledge that they in turn used to fight demons and establish the plague hunters.
Upon their death, no one could remember who they where, and all written knowledge of their identity seemed to turn up blank.

whoever they where remains a mystery, the holy grail of the plague hunters would be that lost knowledge.
