Character design tips #4- Colours

Axial

Welcome all to a new series of tips, tricks and advice that may help you design/redesign a character. Please note Firstly I am NOT a professional, im just forwarding my observations!

Fourth tip is accociated with Colours.

A character's colour scheme is mostly dependent on the prefereances of the person that designed it, however there are a few steps you can try for yourself if you are having trouble, The main tip for today being to see how your character looks in greyscale, where only shades are seen, This is how I found out that the yellow used on Fifi previously was too vibrant and as a result people struggled to see Fifis facial expressions. The bright yellow and turquise on the face clashed and conflicted, making it hard to see fifis actual face, So come the next revision I toned down the yellow to more of a pastel shade, and her facial expressions became much clearer, along with being much easier on the eyes. Along with this, she hasnt lost her fun and outwardly bouncy appearance.

Some colors ive generally noticed being a theme is that nuetral colours (black, grey and white) pretty much fit with any pallete and can act as a good seperator to help break the character up a little bit and make it look more interesting. Black however along with red, purple or green I think are quite sinister colours and could be quite happily used for a villain.

On the flip side Green, blue, and gold teamed with white could be seen as a heroic combination that could tell the veiwer that this is the hero and eminates hope and solidarity by looking at the character.

Generally, yellow, orange, purple, pink and turquise are quite fun colours.

Dont be afraid to experiment with different colours and make your character your own, give it is own little flare!

If you have any further questions feel free to post them in the comments below!! Ill answer them the best I can!
