Character design tips #5- Revisions

Axial

Welcome all to a new series of tips, tricks and advice that may help you design/redesign a character. Please note Firstly I am NOT a professional, im just forwarding my observations!

Fifth tip is accociated with Character revisions.

It can be easy to forget that when one makes a character, that it can grow with you, character creation/design is only limited by the imagination of the person designing the character. Its important to remember this fact though, and that character redesigns and revisions are A-OK! Just dont forget to update their reference sheet if they have one, Fifi has been redesigned twice, and given an alternate bunny form which she can change into with a hologram cloak! Each of these revisions ive implemented into Fifi's backstory.

The reason fifi is where she is now is simply because ive asked crazy questions like "what would she look like as a bunny?" "What would she look like with a floating head?" "what would she look like if I put this on her?" I experimented with it, drew them up, and with each revision I liked it so much as to make it cannon, and implemented it into her story.

Now naturally you do not have to go this extreme as to decapitate your character, or turning them into a bunny. But I find by asking questions "what would the character look like with this thing" or "what would the character look like after this happened?", or "What other designs can I come up with?" All just seems to be part of my thought process and its super fun to find out the results and play around with my characters like that.

Some people would rather reserve characters for stories which is perfectly fine as well, some questions that may help you are such things like:

"What is the world they are living in like?"
"What timeframe are they from?"
"Do they receive any special items or equipment?"
"Where do they live? in a city, forest etc.?"
"Have they had anything happen to them to inflict perminent damage (such as a missing limb, scars)?"
"What are they like as a character? Serious, jolly, low energy?"
"Do they have any materialistic possessions that they hold dear? (such as a scarf from their family)"
"What species are they? Are there any reprimands they are expected to meet (such as wearing clothes) or are they more of a wild speices?"

These are just some questions that could help you develop your character

Dont be afraid to experiment with different things and make your character your own, give it is own little flare!

If you have any further questions feel free to post them in the comments below!! Ill answer them the best I can!

Cheers
