Ahnurthian Dragon Sketchdump 2

Amber-Aria

Here's another receipt-doodle sketch dump of Ahnurthian dragon concepts for anyone who is interested! I seem to get my ideas more outside of my sketchbook than in it. Numbered for easy reference. If there's anything that needs clarification or if you'd like to ask more about a particular species, please don't hesitate to comment!

And just to get an idea of how many dragons I've been creating for my world, so far I've got over twenty different species, including the four elementa guardians and the two god figures.

Please click Download to see all the sketches! Sorry for the long size format!

(1) The Seriph, a common species of Spirelander. This is the brainstorming process as I try to finalize the facial features, which were bugging me for a long time, as well as the overall slinky appearance of this dragon. A little implausible, but fun as heck to draw!

(2) Essaim, the legendary Deeplander. Initially, I was calling this dragon Legion, as he was formed from thousands of tiny bug-like dragons, with a larger, central core creature (the one with hair). The inspiration for this design comes from damselflies with a dab of firefly.

(3) The near final look for Essaim from my sketchbook, adding more mantis-like features to his face and head shape. As a tidbit, his name is the French word for swarm! Though I pronounce it differently.

(4) The main combined form of Essaim, appearing to be a dragon made of foliage. Here's a transcript of the text:

"Essaim is a thoroughly dangerous dragon despite its size, as it makes up for a frail body with elemental prowess and vicious poisons.

In its combined form, Essaim utilizes the illusion of strength as its main defense. While the plant dragon looks immense and fierce, it is actually very fragile, and can only withstand minimal contact and pressure before the framework crumbles. But, this form also possesses the strongest connections for utilizing the core's concentrated pearl. Concussive shouts and earthquakes work best in this form."

(5) Part of a batch of brainstorming sketches for Viathan, the legendary Northlander. Inspired by a combination of a blue whale and a manta ray. Her exact appearance is not yet solidified, but her basic shape will likely stay the same.

(6) The Embertongue, a common species of Riftlander. Here's a transcript of the text:

  • very dexterous hands, more handlike than pawlike.
*claws shaved on indiv. who require high precision in work.
  • colours vary from deep golds to bronze to copper to deep and bright reds, even black with red.
  • on the smaller side - 9' standing on hind legs
  • wings held with thumbs clasped in front. Appearence of cape a la gargoyles.
  • look like weredragons in a way?"

"Horns grow longer for females, thicker for males.

"Horns merge into brow ridges. Cracks = flexible."

"While they can breathe fire normally, a sac in their throats can create fireballs by mixing pyromenta with a napalm-like gel they secrete."

Not mentioned here is the fact that Embertongues can set their tail tips on fire the same way that they create fireballs, by "sweating" the flammable gel through pores in the cracks of their tailspike.
