Ahnurthian Dragon Sketchdump 1

Amber-Aria

So, for the last long while, I've been doing sketches at work during slow hours, on whatever scraps of paper I can find, usually receipt paper, as I brainstorm for my dragon designs. I thought it would be good to compile them, and share some of my concepts with everyone! (Or at least everyone who cares to read my mass of paragraphs)

Numbered for easy reference. If there's anything that needs clarification or if you'd like to ask more about a particular species, please don't hesitate to comment!

Please click Download to see all the sketches! Sorry for the long size format!

(1) The Drifters, a species of Northlander. Brainstorming for the final appearance. I've had these dragons finalized for a long time, though details for the face and body are still being tweaked, as I never seem to draw the same dragon twice. Squishy baby Drifters are on the right, inspired by baby seals~

(2) The Wandering Spring, a species of Deeplander. This species practically developed itself once I got the appearance down pat. Here's a copy of the text, since my handwriting is tiny and poor:

Page 1:

  • "No webbing on feet, just claws."
  • "Placement of crystals is random."
  • "Head separated from spring wall."

Page 2:

  • "When walking, feet curl outward, hands curl inward."
  • "A wandering spring never runs, as fleeing risks spilling precious water.
  • 1st defense: steam cloud
  • 2nd defense: warning groans
  • 3rd defense: gaiamenta concussive blast, vocalized vibrations."

Page 3:

  • "Young wandering springs require a hot, moist environment until their stony scales develop.
  • For the incubation and the first few months of life, they live in their mother's pool, and eat the moss and bugs that grow around the stones."
  • "A wandering spring's pool helps it to dissolve and absorb important minerals, as well as release excess heat that its body produces. If its pool is emptied, its body heat skyrockets and makes it extremely ill. Even in human form, if it chose to charm it, its body heat would kill it in two days if its back was not submerged, as the rest of its body is thickly armored and retains heat."

(3) Cumuleo, the legendary Spirelander. Details for Cumuleo with and without clouds. Inspiration for his body shape is taken from a snow leopard, hence how long his tail is.

(4) The Demon Faun, also known as the "Omen Dragon", a species of Riftlander. They live in the fiercest deserts in Ahnurth, and are actually a very reasonable species, just unfortunately burdened with a bad reputation by both dragon and human alike because of their appearance and superstition. Some of the more unreadable tiny text reads:

  • "Hunch retains water & nutrients."
  • "Black around eyes reduces sand glare."
  • "Horns protect neck muscle."
  • "Tops of wings tuck under "hunch" to protect from sun and sand."

(5) First concept sketches done for Cumuleo, more to get the idea for him down than any finalized appearance.

(6) Top left is simply some failed sketches for some creatures, though the rest resulted in a pair of new dragon ideas that are still being fleshed out. On the bottom left, the initial idea for a mantis-like Riftlander called an Obsidian Guard.

On the right, a more complete idea for a blind armadillo and badger-like Deeplander called a Bedwyrm, called so for its ability to dig into and make nests in even the hardest bedrock. They have the ability to direct streams of gaiamenta into their claws that vibrate them at high speeds, making digging through stone an easy task.
