A First Cut at a Snake by aeto (critique requested)

A First Cut at a Snake (critique requested)

aeto

A while back, I tried to play around with Sculptris to see if I could actually sculpt things in that system. I was never terribly successful, as something just didn’t connect.

Last weekend, I was talking to an artist friend at a small get-together, and she suggested if I really wanted to learn to do 3D sculpting, I needed to bite the bullet and get ZBrush. I finally gave in to the temptation, and did so today.

What you see above is the result of around 3 hours with the program. This particular snake took around 1 1/2 hours to sculpt, give or take (I wasn’t timing myself). This was entirely sculpted from scratch; there wasn’t some base figure it started with; it started with a plain sphere.

The fact that I could pull that off, having never touched the program before today, in an hour and a half rather amazes me. Yes, the UI is… strange. Beyond strange… The thing is, it seems to work. I can work this like I’d work clay, only this is, in all reality, so much easier. No fingerprints, easy to smooth, etc…

And this is just the “basic functionality” of the program. Oh, this could be fun…

(It's flagged for critique. I know it's not perfect, but am always willing to hear what might be wrong. Note it was more to learn ZBrush than anything else)

Looks great. I've never sculpted straight from Zbrush but instead from programs like Maya and 3DSMax. Also a idea to keep in mind is Alphas and Layers as they helped me a whole lot from when I first sculpted. Zbrush is a great tool and hope you get better and better. As for whats's particularly wrong, most of it can be fixed with some research and further tests. Though it does look great to me, especially the mouth. I have an example of my workflow of something I did for a project on my page if you want to see what it's like from sculpting a tool from a 3D program. Excellent for a first test.

That looks very good for being the first time using the program. Continued use will make the controls more and more natural. Keep it up.
