Time/Era: Late 18th C. Europe

I based this image around late 18th Century (Enlightenment) fashion. As Rocaco (very fancy, elegant, embroidered outfits) fashion of the earlier decades was giving way to a less extravagant, more utilitarian approach.

Further taking on the theme of the Enlightenment period, I decided to draw the character in his study, in a typical portrayal of an intellectual; loosened waistcoat, weaing a long, Indian inspired banyan (or 'housecoat'), and otherwise more of a relaxed dress.

"Loose dresses contribute to the easy and vigorous exercise of the faculties of the mind. This remark is so obvious, and so generally known, that we find studious men are always painted in gowns, when they are seated in their libraries."
