Shading Tutorial by Kannos

Shading Tutorial

Kannos

Since a lot of folks have asked me how I give my characters such a 3-dimensional look, I decided to make a quick tutorial showing how I shade. I shade all my 'simple shaded' pieces using this method. Shading with a greyscale image is ideal since it allows you to focus solely on the tone of the piece and the form of the character without needing to worry about colors, markings, etc. This is my trick to building up a sense of form and depth. I hope this tutorial is helpful and if you have any questions please feel free to ask! :)

This is really awesome, thank you so much for taking the time to make this! I'm familiar with gradient mapping but I always ended up applying patterns in odd and different ways, so it will be interesting to try your method.

This is amazing. I have been trying to do the greyscale shading but failing miserably, mostly because I am derpy as hell. But this is laid out and written really well, and I think I can try it again! Thanks for this! :D
