Commission for Chet

A black and white painting. You'd think it would make it easier, and it does on some levels, but it makes it different on others. I did not have a good title for this one, so Chet actually named it for me.

Medium: Acrylic on Panel
Size: 11 in x 14 in (27.94cm x 35.56cm)

Very excellent painting! The details are wonderful. I especially like the definition/values on the shoulder closest to the viewer.

Wow, that's a superb piece! If you don't mind my asking, were you painting white over a black background, or black over white?

I first painted the ground a value 4-5 grey. Then haphazardly painted a chalky black (value 9.5ish), I call it charcoal black. To get a foggy/smoky effect. Then with thin light grey (value 7) I painted in the mid tones, thickening and thinning as needed to get lighter and darker values. Then finished up with the highlights with thin titanium white, layered to vary its intensity.

The simple answer is I painted light grey on really dark grey. [Grin]

Heh, a complex technique, but well worth it. Thank you for sharing this piece with us!
